large stream disadvantage

Hi 
Peoples say JMS is slower than ftp and is very bad idea sending heavy stream messages (about 1,2 GB) with JMS. I found nothing to be considered as disadvantage!
Has somebody experience with large streams sending with JMS ? Is ActiveMQ reliable and good choose in this respect?
