New bootstrap on 1.5

Hi there,

Just trying the new bootstrap on JDK 1.5.0_04 and getting:

[mark@devdesk components]$ ./bootstrap.sh
Note: Some input files use unchecked or unsafe operations.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:unchecked for details.
Using settings from C:\Documents and Settings\mark\.m2\settings.xml
You SHOULD have a ~/.m2/settings.xml file and must contain at least
the following information:

<settings>
  <localRepository>/path/to/your/repository</localRepository>
</settings>

Alternatively, you can specify -Dmaven.repo.local=/path/to/m2/repository

HOWEVER, since you did not specify a repository path, maven will use:
C:\Documents and Settings\mark\.m2\repository to store artifacts
locally.
Using the following for your local repository: C:\Documents and
Settings\mark\.m2\repository
Using the following for your remote repository:
[http://repo1.maven.org/maven2,
http://snapshots.maven.codehaus.org/maven2/]
Analysing dependencies ...

Actually there appears to be a few more related space issues (seems
like I'm the only daft one insisting on running mvn under
spaced-paths.. ;)  I'll submit a patch later.

Looking at the scripts it seems due to mvn and bootstrap using
different java.exe's:

* mvn.sh first invokes java via $JAVA_HOME/bin/java, if defined and it
exists, thus java.home sysprop points to the JDK

* bootstrap.sh just invokes straight java, thus using the os path
precedence which picks up the JRE, so the sysprop points to the JRE

The proper fix would be for bootstrap.sh to use the same JAVACMD
lookup as mvn.sh.

I have the env var JAVA_HOME set to "C:\Progra~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_04",
but the JRE java.exe takes precedence and thus the sysprop java.home
points to the JRE. Not sure how plexus compiler is working if it uses
the same method..?

The same. You need to set JAVA_HOME to the JDK, not the JRE.

Re: New bootstrap on 1.5

It's looking at "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\..\lib\tools.jar",
which obviously doesn't exist. I'm using the standard Java5
installation of:

C:\Program Files\Java
|_ jdk1.5.0_04
  |_ lib/tools.jar
|_ jre1.5.0_04 (== $JAVA_HOME)

Seems like $JAVA_HOME/../lib/tools.jar is not a reliable expression -
what do the plexus compiler components use?

Re: New bootstrap on 1.5

Can you drop a statement in JavacCompiler.java to echo the path to
tools.jar it is trying to use, and check it exists for you?

it looks in ${java.home}/../lib/tools.jar, and ${java.home} is usually
the location of the JRE used ($JAVA_HOME/jre)

Brett
