Portlet State

I have seen many questions on this list that I believe are answered by the
careful understanding of:

Controller State.

(this is "controller" from Model View Controller, not the Jetspeed Portlet
Controller).

These are questions about interactions between different portlets on the
same page, about portlets getting form submits from other portlets, about
caching of portlet responses to deal with lack of form fields at a later
time, etc.

I've documented this problem, and an approach to solve it, for my CHEF
project. Althought my intended audience was my CHEF developers, I think the
description of the problem and the solution might apply to the Jetspeed user
population in general.

If you are interested, please take a look at:
http://chef.si.umich.edu/chef-docs/chef_docs/specs/notes/controller_state.ht
ml
<http://chef.si.umich.edu/chef-docs/chef_docs/specs/notes/controller_state.h
tml>

Note that the specific solution outlined in this document involves code we
have in CHEF that is not generally available in Jetspeed. I can make this
code available, or, better yet, merge it into the 1.3 development of
Jetspeed, if there is interest. Even without my particular code solution, I
think the understanding of the issues will help; there may be other ways to
implement this.

I welcome your questions, comments and suggestions.

Re: Customization with latest builds

Posted by Karen Schuchardt <kl...@pnl.gov>.
I have just tested this again (java 1.3), tomcat-4.0.1. I have two webapps:
jetspeed - the 1.3a2 release
march18 - a March18 build

When accessing the jetspeed app, logon as turbine, customize works fine.

When accessing the march18 app,
I log on as the turbine user and select the Customize html link. It displays the
same screen as when I log on as the turbine user. Same for the Customize wml
link.

Here is the log starting where I hit the Customize html link. It seems to be
going back to Home.vm

Re: Customization with latest builds

Posted by Karen Schuchardt <kl...@pnl.gov>.
I tested a few combinations of jetspeed, tomcat, java. Here are my results

jetspeed 13a2/java 1.3, tomcat4.0.1 jetspeed works, customization works
jetspeed 13a2,java1.4,tomcat 4.0.1 500 server error
jetspeed 13a2,java1.4, tomcat4.0.3 jetspeed works, customization works

jetspeed March18,java1.3,tomcat 4.0.1 jetspeed works, customization does not
jetspeed March18/java 1.4, tomcat 4.0.1 500 server error
jetspeed March18/java 1.4, tomcat 4.0.3 jetspeed works, customization does not

The only problem I've seen with tomcat 4.0.3 is that I have to kill the java
process after running shutdown.sh. I suspect the server errors with tomcat 4.0.1
and java 1.4 have to do with the location of some jar files. I've seen traffic
about that in the past but don't recall the details. I have never tried tomcat
4.0.2.

It looks to me like this might be the PEID problem Glenn mentioned.

I didn't know that Jetspeed ever worked with tomcat 4.0.2 or greater.
Isn't that an outstanding bug?

Try going back to 4.0.1

The edit account screen seems to work.

What am I missing? I didn't change any source. I'm running with tomcat
4.0.3 and java 1.4.

I was hoping to look at the IFrame portlet that has been discussed.
Could you recommend a date for which I should grab the cvs snapshot?

Customization with latest builds

Posted by Karen Schuchardt <kl...@pnl.gov>.
Hello,

I've downloaded todays build and also the March 18 build. I cannot seem to
get the customization screen on either of these builds.

After logging in as turbine and selecting the customize html (or wml)
options, I just keep seeing the same user =turbine page. The url seems to
reflect the fact that I'm trying to customize.
http://adonis.emsl.pnl.gov:8082/march18/portal/action/controls.Customize?reset=on

The edit account screen seems to work.

What am I missing? I didn't change any source. I'm running with tomcat
4.0.3 and java 1.4.

I was hoping to look at the IFrame portlet that has been discussed. Could
you recommend a date for which I should grab the cvs snapshot?

Thanks,
Karen
