How to change the definition of an attribute.. e.g required-field?

Please detail how do I change the definition of an attribute used in XML.
For example..

If I want to change the definition of required field for appending a star
"*" in the left hand side as * Title instead of Title <text-box> *.

Please explain the same with an example.
