I would like to chime in here and add that this issue doesn't only affect
Solaris, but Linux (specifically RH9, 2.4 kernel) as well.

I upgraded to 2.2.13 this weekend and experienced the exact same issues.

Upgraded firstly to apr-1.3.8, no change.  Then applied the patch attached here
and things are working fine again.

(Point of note to readers: I also then saw MySQL connections fill with queries
in a locked state when running Gallery -- you may need to kill some queries if
you hit this issue).
