As described in a PS to that stackoverflow answer, further analysis showed that an attempt actually is made to add a transformation if necessary, but the checks whether or not it's necessary are incorrect (and very weird) and the calculation of the transform itself is wrong. (For some example PDFs that code might work but for the wrong reasons...)
