Donating Bunkai to Sling
Hi Everybody!
I've been talking with Lars a bit about Apache and Sling and Bunkai and so
on, and from my point of view, it might be a good idea to donate Bunkai to
Sling.
At the moment, the code is a little bit in disarray, but workable. I'm
continually working on it to make it more modular.
My main goals with Bunkai at the moment are the following;
1. To finish the modularization so that the new Sling dojox.data store that
Lars has created can be used. Bunkai think more in the way of file
list/load/save, so I'll write a small adapter for the data store shortly.
2. To start modularizing the editing. At the moment, HTML editing is pretty
hardwired. I would like to reacha point where it is simple to just add a
editor plugin to Bunkai, and make it pop up, while maintaining the file
access abstraction.
3. To have a stand-alone version of Bunkai available for people who might
want to use it for other purposes (on google code, or elsewhere)
4. To see if there could be some other cool thing one could add beside
simple resource editing, when it comes to Sling integration :)
But basically I'm asking if you want the Bunkai codebase to be a part of
Sling, and if so, how do we do that? I have very little experience on the
specifics.
Hmm I promised Lars I would read up on that :) Sorry, I'll do that next.
But there you have it.
Please advice and comment as necessary.
Cheers,
PS

OK. That's good to know.
I'll try to contact the person in question.

Note that ASF people have been successful in some cases in getting
other projects to adopt dual licensing or change their license to
allow their products to be redistributed with ASF software.
I know nothing about EditArea but if you know these people you might
want to ask them.
See http://people.apache.org/~rubys/3party.html for what license are
ok, basically the best is a BSD-like license - or obviously the Apache
License itself, which can be used for non-ASF software as well.

It's not unfortunately, we are not allowed to redistribute LGPL stuff
with Apache software.
If the editor can be downloaded separately, we could distribute Sling
with another one, and instructions on how to use EditArea instead.
You can still attach the current code to JIRA for us to play with, but
that cannot go into our svn repository with a required LGPL component,
unfortunately.

OK. I should mention though, that the editor part of Bunkai is called
EditArea and is LGPL. I hope that is commensurable with the Apache license.
There a couple of other nice js code editors out there, but none as nice as
EditArea.
I'll open a JIRA issue,a nd we'll proceed from there.
Thanks!

I think that's a very good idea!
Careful packaging might be needed though, if you also want Bunkai to
be usable standalone, outside of Sling.

As the ASF has your CLA on file (we *do* love acronyms, not?)
everything's fine, you'd just have to create a JIRA issue and attach
the code there. A first rough version is ok for us to figure out how
to be integrate it is fine.
