starting Tomcat 4.0.3 on Compaq Tru64 Unix

I'm having some problems starting Tomcat 4.0.3 on Compaq
Tru64 Unix. I've looked for a FAQ that might address the problem,
because it seems like this is probably a common beginner's issue,
but I haven't been able to find any information that addresses this.
The problem I'm seeing is, when I run startup.sh, Tomcat doesn't seem
to be starting up. I get the following information written to the
screen:

 Using CATALINA_BASE:   /lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3
 Using CATALINA_HOME:   /lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3
 Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/temp
 Using JAVA_HOME:       /usr/opt/java131

and catalina.out shows:

usage: java org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina [ -config {pathname} ] [ -debug ] [ -nonaming ] { start | stop }

Doing a ps -Af verifies that it's not running. I put "echo" in
front of the command where Tomcat gets started to see what it's
doing, and it shows:

/usr/opt/java131/bin/java -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/bin:/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/common/lib -classpath /usr/opt/java131/lib/tools.jar:/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/bin/bootstrap.jar -Dcatalina.base=/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3 -Dcatalina.home=/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3 -Djava.io.tmpdir=/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/temp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap  start

I did notice that the temp directory
/lcs/users/ewn/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3/temp didn't exist after I
unpacked the installation, so I created it, but that didn't seem to have
an effect. I also tried running it under csh (usually I use ksh) because
we have some other software here that does need to be run under csh, but
that didn't seem to help, either, unfortunately.

I've been searching through the archives of this list looking to see
if anyone else has had this problem and did see one person who requested
help, Dieter Lunn -- if you've solved the problem you had, would you
be willing to share what you did to fix it or give me any hints on what
I could look into to help track this down?

Thanks very much!

Lee Newman, ewn@psulias.psu.edu

On my JSP project with Tomcat4/Apache sometimes, in some pages, the page

JSPs and
without parts of the master JSP.

It is not normal and I am worried by this... do somebody can help me??

I guess it's just typo error.

The default port for Tomcat is 8080:

To change this features, go to

$TOMCAT_HOME/conf and edit the file server.xml

<!-- A "Server" is a singleton element that represents the entire JVM,
     which may contain one or more "Service" instances. The Server
     listens for a shutdown command on the indicated port.

     Note: A "Server" is not itself a "Container", so you may not
     define subcomponents such as "Valves" or "Loggers" at this level.
 -->

<Server port="8005" shutdown="SHUTDOWN" debug="0">

This Port 8005 is the port on which Tomcat is waitin' for a kill server
cmd...
Only necessary to modify if already in use by another app.

 <!-- Define a non-SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8080 -->
    <Connector
className="org.apache.catalina.connector.http.HttpConnector"
               port="8080" minProcessors="5" maxProcessors="75"
               enableLookups="true" redirectPort="8443"
               acceptCount="10" debug="0" connectionTimeout="60000"/>
    <!-- Note : To disable connection timeouts, set connectionTimeout
value
     to -1 -->

The port above 8080 is the std port on which Tomcat, as a standalone app,
is runnin' on.
Modify this port in case yu need to make as a std web server; for
instance 80.

<!-- Define an Apache-Connector Service -->
  <Service name="Tomcat-Apache">

    <Connector
className="org.apache.catalina.connector.warp.WarpConnector"
               port="8008" minProcessors="5" maxProcessors="75"
               enableLookups="true" appBase="webapps"
               acceptCount="10" debug="0"/>

The port below is the port used by the Tomcat-Apache communication
module.
In my case the WarpConnector ( mod_webapp in the Apache Server ).
Yu can also have port 8009 for AJP13, port 8007 for AJP12
And, as far as i remember, 8008 for ApacheJServ.

Hope this help.

why can't refresh jsp page in dialog window?

Posted by Henry <hx...@binary-solutions.net>.
when that JSP is in client browser alone, fine. But when it is invoked in a
dialog window,

showModelDialog("aaa.jsp");

that jsp is not refreshed everytime i made any change to it. How should I
configure tomcat
in order to let the server refresh it every time it is invoked in the
dialog?

Thanks a lot Remy, I've got it working for everything except PUT.

I notice in the source that the PUT method is not implemented in
WebdavServlet. Is this supposed to be handled by the DefaultServlet?

Both. The security check is declared in web.xml (same as with a standard
webapp).

It uses the standard security provided by the container.

It's either read or read/write.

In memory.

No.

It's quite rudimentary overall (just allows uploading and resource
manipulation).

WebdavServlet

Posted by August Detlefsen <au...@yahoo.com>.
How do I implement security using the WebdavServlet? mod_dav uses a
standard .htpasswd file to track the various developers' logins, is
this similar?

Can I limit the types of DAV actions that can be performed?

Where is the DAV lock information stored?

Does anyone know the possible init-params for the WebdavServlet? I got
these from the web.xml in the example, but are there other params?:

 <servlet>
    <servlet-name>webdav</servlet-name>

<servlet-class>org.apache.catalina.servlets.WebdavServlet</servlet-class>
    <init-param>
      <param-name>debug</param-name>
      <param-value>0</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <init-param>
      <param-name>listings</param-name>
      <param-value>true</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <!-- Uncomment this to enable read and write access -->
    <init-param>
      <param-name>readonly</param-name>
      <param-value>false</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
  </servlet>

Re: starting Tomcat 4.0.3 on Compaq Tru64 Unix

Posted by Dean Bennett <de...@gbtn.net>.
Its the "$@" in the java calls. For some reason, Tru64 handles an empty
string as an argument differently and complains about it as an invalid
argument.

You can either pass an argument to the script ( -config works, as noted
below), or remove the "$@" in all the java calls, which means that can
never pass in an argument. Or modify the source to ignore it.

My problem exactly. I don't know if it is just Tru64 UNIX or others have the same problem, but either *startup.sh is broken* or there is something messy with shells on Tru64.

The message Lee reported on the bottom is from Catalina and it simply states that the startup parameters were wrong. What must be added is "-config ${CATALINA_HOME}/conf/server.xml". For some reason, it must be explicitely stated on startup. So, on 4.03 I had to edit "startup.sh" line into this:

exec "$PRGDIR"/"$EXECUTABLE" start -config ${CATALINA_HOME}/conf/server.xml

Is org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina supposed to "look around" for it's config file if not specifically stated on command line?

Nix.

Hi,
   May be I didnt get the problem but normally if you
set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME enviourment
variable it works...

You can check that no other application is using port
8080 ...

I hope that it will work becoz it does in my case.
