advanced networking with kvm

how does one actually setup a cloudstack with kvm and advanced networking.
The documentation is not really clear on this.

For example do i need to create my bridges before i try to add the host in
cloudstack or do i let cloudstack create the bridge's.

Also can you choose the name of the kvm traffic freely or do they need to
be in the form of cloudvirbrxxx

is there a short description or tutorial out there for kvm?

Hi David,

The exact setup depends on your requirements - number of NICs whether, you have any of the NICs bonded, if your management interface is on a tagged VLAN, etc. but in essence (ignoring bonding and management VLAN tagging):

You're going to have your physical interfaces - eth0, eth1, etc - These should be configured to be 'up' but have no ip address info in them.
These interfaces should be configured either as part of a bridge (strange bridges with only one interface connected to each). Ie eth0 > cloudbr0 and eth1 > cloudbr1.
Assuming eth0/cloudbr0 carries the management traffic, the management IP address, subnet etc would be in ifcfg-cloudbr0

Use cloudbr0, cloudbr1 etc as your network labels in CloudStack.

CloudStack will create (say) guest VLAN 505 on cloudbr1 and it will look like cloudbr1.500 on the host.

The names themselves aren't important (you might want to go with cloudbrMgmt and cloudbrGuest) just make sure the network labels in CloudStack match.

Hey there David,

All very valid questions, I believe there is a runbook for cloudstack/kvm,
I don¹t know how relevant it is today. Not sure if its being actively
maintained.

The unabridged install guide has loads of useful information it can be
found in the link[1] below.

If you deviate from a simple vanilla install (hypervisor using 1 nic, type
scenario) you should create the bridges out of band.

I also don¹t believe there is any restriction on naming your bridge. Just
remember to have them match up to what cloudstack has as its traffic type
labels.

Hope that helps.
