How do I deploy Portlet

I am very new to Portlet and looking desparately help from you guys. I have installed Pluto (Binary dist) on D:\pluto, where portlets are on D:\pluto\webapps. Now If I want to deploy any portlet, how do I do this. I have installed Maven on D:\Maven. 

If I copied the portlet directory on D:\pluto\webapps, and made the changes on %CATALINA_HOME%\webapps\pluto\WEB-INF\data\portletentityregistry.xml and 
%CATALINA_HOME%\webapps\pluto\WEB-INF\data\pageregistry.xml, the new portlet links shows but no contents.

Please help me the steps I need to make, to deploy and run the portlet properly.
