Is there anyplace/anywhere to get a free SSL certificate?

You could install OpenSSL and create your own. Not as difficult as it may
sound. The on-line help for the apache mod_ssl module (derived from OpenSSL)
tells you how.

If you just want a temporary certificate to test functionality you can get
on from www.thawte.com.
