Verification of Download

XML Team:
   Can someone tell me how to use the "sig" files to verify my download?  I 
went to the following location
http://xml.apache.org/dist/xalan-j/old/
and downloaded the following
xalan-j_1_2_2.zip
xalan-j_1_2_2.zip.sig
Am I getting the correct files to do this?  I have not used signature files 
before are they for verification of the downlaod?
