@xabriel, sorry for the delay, I was out for the last 4 days.
I'm skeptical that it is important to keep the original shape of the data. One aspect of my example above was that the shape typically doesn't matter once you use those fields. But, since Spark is unable to really express what you want here, I think it is reasonable to go forward with this PR.
