mod_perl make test failed tests

Hello mod_perl community

Environment:
FC1,
apache2.0.58,
perl5.8.8,
mod_perl2.0.2.

I am getting some failed tests during the "make test" for mod_perl 2.0.2,
in particular:

Failed Test Stat Wstat Total Fail Failed List of
Failed
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
t/apache/content_length_header.t 27 1 3.70% 17
t/api/status.t 6 2 33.33% 4-5

I am aware that there are some current postings concerning this issue.
So I
proceeded to

  % cd mod_perl-2.0.2
  % t/TEST -clean
  % t/TEST -verbose compat/apache_util.t modperl/pnotes.t

which reported

  All tests successful.
  Files=2, Tests=23,  1 wallclock secs ( 0.68 cusr +  0.04 csys =  0.72 CPU)
  [warning] server localhost.localdomain:8529 shutdown

Question:
Is the resulting mod_perl usable? Or is it to be considered untrustworthy?

(I will send the detailed test reports, if you request them, but since
this seems
to be a known issue, I presumed, correctly, I hope, that the above would be
sufficient.)

Regards, and thanks

There's more appropriate forums for continuing that
line of discussion :)

As for what's best to use in a production server, there's
lots of choices, of course - you could look at LAMP,
although some would recommend FreeBSD for heavy network
traffic. A lot depends on your hardware, the anticipated
level of usage, whether most pages are expected to be
static or dynamic, etc. etc.

The great strides made with Apache/2.x on Windows
make it viable for use as a production server (which
many people do). The question about threads is
a bit academic here, as Apache uses it in their
mpm_winnt module for Windows, which was designed
from scratch and is optimized for use on Win32.
Similarly, ActivePerl 8xx (based on perl-5.8) has
made great gains, especially regarding thread
handling. So, especially if there's other reasons
for using Windows (eg, availability of other
applications), running Apache/Perl/... on Win32
these days is probably a legitimate option.

I would never run a public server where I did not have the ability
to inspect the source code that it ran on. I think that is a lot like
driving a car where you can not pop open the hood, or drinking a can of pop
that does not have a list of ingredients on it.

In reality thousands of people use the same setup you have in production.

To be honest, I'm running Apache, mod_perl and DBI under Win32 (+Mason) and
I can't complain about it.

I'd like to test and compare with LAMP to see what's the best (in term of
speed and memory managament), but what you told me made me jump, thinking
"Am I doing a mistake when targetting to use Win32 on a production server?"

Let me have your conclusuions if you can,

Thanks,

Lionel.

I can't speak about Win32 at all. Personally, I wouldn't use it anywhere if you paid me, but hey
thats just me.

I haven't actually tried worker + DBI + mod_perl2 recently. Last time I got ugly warnings in the logs
telling me not to do this.

I'll try again tonightish and see what happens.

Hi all,

This post is not related to the main topic, but Philip, you said:

I saw that in DBI docs, but I just thought this piece of info was a bit
dated. But, now, you're saying the same.
Does this mean that you would not use any Win32 platform for production, as
Win32 Apache MPMs are threaded, and Win32 Perl distributions compiled with
ithreads enabled to fit the threaded MPMs?

This is a bit frightening.

I'm hoping we/I will find time for mod_perl 2.0.4 to include XS glue for
APR's newish apr_mod_dbd
and the mysql, pg, oracle, odbc drivers behind it, thus allowing
connection pooling.

Most likely. Especially if you're not using a threaded mpm (worker,
event) or going not to make use threads in your code.

I think DBI seems to be making progress on CLONE() ing $dbh handles, at
least from the test results I got/saw over on dbi-dev (at) perl (dot)
org for the 1.51-RC1 just posted. Its docs still say not to use DBI
with ithread enabled perl in production, so I'd go with that recommendation.

You are again correct.

HTH.

P.S.
Its bed time where I'm at. (PST)

Hello Philip

Thanks for your reply, which was very reassuring, actually.

By the way, my perl5.8.3 is built for i386-linux-thread-multi,
but my 5.8.8, which is what I built the mod_perl.so with,
is built for i686-linux. Two questions, then:
Is the non-threaded perl5.8.8 / mod_perl combination the
preferred one?
If I subsequently rebuild perl5.8.8 for i686-linux-thread-multi,
will I have to re-make the mod_perl ? (I presume the answer to
this is yes.)

These are fixed in SVN. You assume correctly. httpd backported/changed
from functionality in 2.1.x to 2.0.56.. Just tests themselves needed to
be updated -- no mod_perl source code.
Install your mod_perl2 and have at fun.

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?rev=411041&view=rev
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?rev=411028&view=rev
If it makes you feel better, you can apply those to your tree and
see the tests pass with your 2.0.2. I would just ignore these 2 though.

Not to worry, 2.0.3 is almost definitely less then 1 month away.

t/TEST -verbose apche/content_length_header.t api/status.t

Yup, your 2 tests didn't fail originally :)
