[jira] Created: (MRM-1418) Archiva Repostories Index is dissapearing with no reason

Archiva Repostories Index is dissapearing with no reason
--------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: MRM-1418
                 URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRM-1418
             Project: Archiva
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: repository scanning
    Affects Versions: 1.3.1
         Environment: Archiva 1.3.1
Linux RedHat
Apache maven 2.0.9
Continuum 1.3.6
            Reporter: Mario Parra

After I migrated from Archiva 1.2.2 to Archiva 1.3.1 the repositories that already existed on my previous installation of Archiva are dissapearing from the Archiva browser index.

Everyday I need to do a re-scan of the repositories to have the repositories and artifacts listed again.

I have looked at the logs at the same time the repositories are been erased from the index but there is no output there.

I have also tried to identify if there is a cronjob or something that causes this behavior but haven't find anything and also the time when this happens is random.

Please Help.

Thanks

Mario Parra commented on MRM-1418:
----------------------------------

I already asked the guy that has access to MySQL logs, let's see what can we find there.

In the mean time, I found a weird behavior, because the number of rows of that table start to bounce until it get to 2 rows. For example:

1. Originally it has 1818 rows
2. When the issue start to happen it decreases to 1214
3. But then, it is 1624
4. Then 1106
5. Then 1320
6. Then 488
and it keeps running like that until I have 2 rows, the same rows that never get deleted, which are for the only artifact I have added after the migration to Archiva 1.3.1

Couldn't be something about the .index or .indexer files I have inside of the repositories?

Another hint:

I setup the info level on RDBMS and SQL logs.

When I start the scanning of a repository "internal" I get a WARN message like this for every single artifact:

2010-08-24 11:10:06,149 [pool-2-thread-1] WARN  JPOX.RDBMS.SQL  - Object with id "commons-net:commons-net:2.0::jar:internal" not found !

Where is it looking for it? or why is this warning message?

I looked and the file is there on the disk on "/repositories/internal/commons-net/commons-net/2.0/commons-net-2.0.jar"

and I have archiva.xml pointing to the correct path of the repository. Am I missing something here?

Thanks so much for your help

Hi,

Yes, the problem was that we accidentally started another instance of Archiva pointing to the same DB. That's why it was being cleaned up.

Thanks a lot for your support.

Another weird stuff... about the database consumers.

In Archiva web application it shows only 1 "Database - Unprocessed Artifacts Scanning" which is "update-db-project".

But on the documentation it mentions that it should show 6 Unprocessed Artifacts Consumers:
    * validate-repository-metadata - Verifies repository metadata files against database.
    * index-archive-toc - Indexes the archiva table of contents for full text search.
    * index-artifact - Indexes the artifact for the 'Find Artifact' functionality.
    * update-db-project - Gets the details of the artifact from the pom and saves it into the database (as a project model)
    * index-public-methods - Indexes the java public methods for full text search.
    * update-db-bytecode-stats - Updates database with java bytecode stats.

Is this some miss-configuration?

Brett Porter commented on MRM-1418:
-----------------------------------

the only reason it would be cleaned is:
- if Archiva scans and finds the artifacts no longer on the disk
- if Archiva is configured to purge the repository of certain snapshots and deletes them from both

In both cases, this would correlate to the files not being on the disk, and not coming back afterwards. It sounds more like an external process affecting the MySQL database - has any such thing been set up? Do you have any logging on the database?

If you continue to suspect Archiva, you can change log4j.xml to increase debugging around the RDBMS and SQL level to see if any delete commands appear in the logs (it is very verbose though!)

[jira] Commented: (MRM-1418) Archiva Repostories Index is dissapearing with no reason

Brett Porter commented on MRM-1418:
-----------------------------------

for the two sets of data you presented above, they correspond to different times and a significantly different duration. So either they are a different repository, or something deleted all the files in the intervening 6 hours. Does that period of time correspond to the scanning crons in either the database or repository tabs?

Changing the location may have had an effect - does it display correctly in the web interface as well as the log above?

You may get to the point where you need to refresh - make sure you have no ~/.m2/archiva.xml, check that the application archiva.xml contains the config desired, delete the database, and restart forcing it to scan everything again.

As for your configuration question - the documentation is referring to the Repository Scanning page, where you are looking at the Database scanning page (which only has one consumer). You should make sure update-db-artifact is enabled in both.

Mario Parra commented on MRM-1418:
----------------------------------

I'm using MySQL 5.0.45.

I just run the repository scan and see that the table "ARCHIVA_ARTIFACT" grew from 16KB to 1.5MB and the index restored again.

What could be the cause of this table to be cleaned?

Thank you very much!
