building apr-util against an apr-devel RPM

Hi all,

I am trying to build apr-util against an RPM of apr (and apr-devel).
During the build it is bombing out like so:

/bin/sh /usr/lib/apr/build/libtool --silent --mode=compile gcc -pthread
  -O2 -g -pipe -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DLINUX=2
-D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE
-I/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include
-I/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/private
-I/usr/include/apr-1    -o xml/apr_xml.lo -c xml/apr_xml.c && touch
xml/apr_xml.lo
xml/apr_xml.c:33:19: ascii.h: No such file or directory
xml/apr_xml.c:37: `ASCII_x' undeclared here (not in a function)
xml/apr_xml.c:37: initializer element is not constant
xml/apr_xml.c:37: (near initialization for `APR_KW_xmlns[0]')
xml/apr_xml.c:37: `ASCII_m' undeclared here (not in a function)
xml/apr_xml.c:37: initializer element is not constant
xml/apr_xml.c:37: (near initialization for `APR_KW_xmlns[1]')

A search on the machine shows that ascii.h is supposed to be part of
expat, but the Redhat supplied expat-devel contains no such file.

Anyone know what this mysterious ascii.h belongs to?

Regards,
Graham

Yes, but the build process tries to find the build files in /usr/build,
which does not exist.

Idealy we need to be able to specify the ./build directory separately
from the include directory.

Silly question, are you ./buildconf'ing --with-apr=/xxx

It's first a buildconf option.

I've tried to take Fedora development apr-util's spec file and get that
to work, but it's not giving me any luck.

Now it's bombing like this, any ideas?

+ ./configure --host=i686-redhat-linux-gnu --build=i686-redhat-linux-gnu
--target=i386-redhat-linux --program-prefix= --prefix=/usr
--exec-prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin
--sysconfdir=/etc --datadir=/usr/share --includedir=/usr/include
--libdir=/usr/lib --libexecdir=/usr/libexec --localstatedir=/var
--sharedstatedir=/usr/com --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --with-apr=/usr
--includedir=/usr/include/apr-1 --with-ldap --without-gdbm
./configure: line 1392: syntax error near unexpected token `config.nice'
./configure: line 1392: `APR_CONFIG_NICE(config.nice)'
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.65697 (%build)

You need to screw around a bit to make some of the files relocate
properly; look at the %install of the Fedora apr.spec, it's handled
there.

Cool, that gets it further, now it breaks like this:

gawk -f /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-1.0.0/build/make_var_export.awk
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_base64.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_buckets.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_date.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_dbm.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_hooks.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_md4.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_optional.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_optional_hooks.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_rmm.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_sdbm.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_sha1.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_uri.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_xml.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_anylock.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_strmatch.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_md5.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_uuid.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_xlate.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_reslist.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_queue.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apu_version.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_ldap_url.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apr_ldap.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apu.h
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0/include/apu_want.h > export_vars.h
gawk: fatal: can't open source file
`/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-1.0.0/build/make_var_export.awk' for reading
(No such file or directory)
make[1]: *** [export_vars.h] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/apr-util-1.0.0'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

It seems that make_var_export.awk is part of apr and httpd, but not
apr-util.

Is there something I am missing?

Graham

jfclere's commit broke the build against non-bundled expat; I tried
sending mail about this but mail seems to be getting delayed again.

revert r1.30 of xml/apr_xml.c to fix it.
