I agree that the error is misleading and have run into this in the past.
One way I found to get rid of the error is to use AuthzLDAPAuthoritative on.
However, not only does this prevent the error message but no message at all is
logged. I'd like to see an error logged along the lines of "valid user not in
allow group."
