Reopening this because now I'm not sure whether we should be using documentUrl or contentPathUrl, or something else.

Because we want to support Alfresco document security, it seems to me that the URL we index against has to be capable of performing Alfresco authentication before presenting the document to the user.  Indeed, having a URL that gets a document's contents without any security check at all would seem to be a major security hole.
