[I] bug: object_store_opendal 0.58.1 breaks 0.58 users by upgrading object_store to 0.14 [opendal]
Xuanwo opened a new issue, #8008:
URL: https://github.com/apache/opendal/issues/8008
### Describe the bug
`object_store_opendal` 0.58.1 changed its direct dependency on `object_store` from 0.13.1 to 0.14.1, but it was published as a patch release after 0.58.0.
Cargo treats `object_store_opendal = "0.58"` as compatible with both releases, so a normal dependency update selects 0.58.1. However, `OpendalStore` implements the `ObjectStore` trait from its own `object_store` dependency. Downstream projects that still use `object_store` 0.13 therefore resolve both 0.13 and 0.14, and `OpendalStore` no longer implements their `object_store` 0.13 trait.
This is a public compatibility break: Rust traits from different crate versions are distinct, regardless of source-level API similarities. PR #7935 also explicitly noted that DataFusion 54 remained on `object_store` 0.13 and removed the DataFusion example because it could no longer compile.
### Steps to Reproduce
Create a new crate with:
```toml
[dependencies]
object_store = "0.13.2"
object_store_opendal = "0.58"
opendal = { version = "0.58.1", features = ["services-memory"] }
tokio = { version = "1", features = ["macros", "rt-multi-thread"] }
```
Use `OpendalStore` as an `object_store` 0.13 trait object:
```rust
use std::sync::Arc;
use object_store::ObjectStore;
use object_store_opendal::OpendalStore;
use opendal::services::Memory;
use opendal::Operator;
#[tokio::main]
async fn main() -> Result<(), Box<dyn std::error::Error>> {
let operator = Operator::new(Memory::default())?;
let _store: Arc<dyn ObjectStore> = Arc::new(OpendalStore::new(operator));
Ok(())
}
```
Run:
```shell
cargo check
```
Compilation fails with an error equivalent to:
```text
the trait bound `OpendalStore: object_store::ObjectStore` is not satisfied
note: there are multiple different versions of crate `object_store` in the dependency graph
```
Pinning `object_store_opendal = "=0.58.0"` restores compatibility while still allowing the `opendal` core crate to resolve to 0.58.1.
### Expected Behavior
Every release selected by `object_store_opendal = "0.58"` should preserve compatibility with the `object_store` 0.13 line used by 0.58.0.
Support for the semver-incompatible `object_store` 0.14 line should be published as `object_store_opendal` 0.59.0 rather than as a 0.58.x patch.
### Additional Context
Relevant changes:
- [0.58.0 depends on object_store 0.13.1](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/v0.58.0/integrations/object_store/Cargo.toml#L39-L46)
- [0.58.1 depends on object_store 0.14.1](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/v0.58.1/integrations/object_store/Cargo.toml#L39-L46)
- [PR #7935: upgrade object_store to 0.14.1](https://github.com/apache/opendal/pull/7935)
- [Published object_store_opendal 0.58.1 crate](https://crates.io/crates/object_store_opendal/0.58.1)
A compatible recovery could be to yank `object_store_opendal` 0.58.1, publish a 0.58.x patch that remains on `object_store` 0.13, and carry the 0.14 migration in 0.59. It may also be useful to add a release check that flags semver-incompatible public dependency upgrades in patch releases.

I thought this again. For an integration that uses opendal, i.e., object_store_opendal, it's better to follow the major component - object store too.
When object_store gets a minor version bump, the integration gets a minor version bump too.
The question is about opendal release. If we are releasing a patch release, in this case, we updated object_store, should we release object_store's integration package, object_store_opendal as well?
My feeling is that releasing object_store_opendal is a bit intuitive since object_store updates might (for a 0.x package, I didn't read into it) contain a breaking change. Maybe it's fine to allow release this time. But for the long term release, it's better to only release it along with an opendal minor release.

I've verified the NuGet Trusted Publishing login flow in a test repo with the same setup, so it should work here too.
The policy is permanently enabled now, so it no longer needs to be re-activated every 7 days.
I'll keep pushing PRs to improve and fix the .NET binding this week, and update its docs along the way.

I mean all other crates just need a patch version and object_store_opendal can receive a minor bump

I have yanked `object_store_opendal 0.58.1`. We should fix this in the next release.
also cc @erickguan FYI.

opendal doesn't need to bump if we don't have breaking change 🙌
We just need to bump object_store_opendal. I'm open to have the 0.58.2 release this week or the next week.
