[FlexJS] Need help with compiling MDL examples

Hi,
I've started to investigate the MDL component set and tried to compile the
examples using VSCode.
I've opened the MDL example folder in VSCode, selected the App.mxml and
started compiling using CTRL+SHIFT+B.
By whatever magic a maven build starts but failed at the end [1].

Honestly I don't know what I'm doing here, could somebody point me to the
right directon?

I've used the FlexJS nightly build. (While compiling a js component as
simple test, I've got a circular dependency issue, maybe there's a bug in
the build ? [2])

Thanks,
Olaf

Hi, I will take a look at it later.
But maybe I have a understanding Problem:
Why do I Need the Maven Build including a couple of downloads here?
I've already a working SDK.
I tought I the Examples are just a couple of as3/mxml Files that could be
just compiled.

Thanks,
Olaf

Hi Chris,

I think this is the tasks.json file [1].
However, maybe you remember I've already tested the maven build a lot in the
past and the pure maven build works like a charme and I've also got a
working build for FlashBuilder.
But it seems to me that I've still not understand the big picture
(SDK/IDE/Examples/Maven/...).
So I'll continue to investigate this stuff ;-)

Thanks,
Olaf

Re: [FlexJS] Need help with compiling MDL examples

Does that mean that the “tasks.json” is required in the output of the application in order for it to work?
Does it only influence building in vscode or does it have an influence on building with maven from the commandline?
If the resource is required in the output in any case, we have to move that file to “src/main/resources” as that location is vscode specific.

Hi,

I guess the problem here is that unfortunately the flex compiler does the copying around of static resources in MXMLFlexJSPublisher … I just checked, it should copy files with the ending “json” however. I guess the main difference is that in the Maven build I don’t rely on the compiler copying resources, but the maven-resource-plugin handles that for me (which I think is the better solution).

Unfortunately I couldn’t find the tasks.json file you are talking about, so I couldn’t confirm my assumption.

Just thought I should give some info on the differences between Ant and Maven regarding copying of resources.

Re: [FlexJS] Need help with compiling MDL examples

Posted by Carlos Rovira <ca...@codeoscopic.com>.
Hi Olaf,

about styles missing, probably is since we remove default styles from HTML
(and something to improve this library would be to remove HTML dependency
at all in the future)

this is what makes in our maven pom.xml that builds the example

<additionalCompilerOptions>-compiler.exclude-defaults-css-files=HTML-0.8.0-SNAPSHOT.swc:defaults.css</additionalCompilerOptions>

About build tool:

For me maven is so convenient and easy to develop with. The main problem
with maven is the setup, that use to be very complex, but that was that
Chris Dutz make for us, and IMHO it was a genius setup.

So once we have a the setup we can develop framework and/or apps at the
same time with a real easy and quick workflow.

In my case:

1.- I'm on Mac and use to have tree terminal windows open pointing to three
repos. In each window I run "mvn clean install" (first in falcon, then on
typedefs and finaly on asjs). And I have in my local maven repo the updated
artifacts with all the changes I code (added or fixed). Notice that Chris
has plans in the future to unify all so we only need to do one mvn clean
install. These are 28, 11 and 46 secs what's really cool, I use to update
from Git (with source tree) at least once a day and rebuild to develop with
fresh code. So this is somewhat residual in my day-to -day right? :)

2.- Then for daily development: In concrete for dev MDL lib and MDL
example, have two VSCode windows one with each project open. Then, as I
create or fix something in MDL swc library project, I push CTRL+CMD+B to
build with maven (and this refresh the maven artifact with latest code) -
This is 5 secs build (so great too :)). Finaly I make changes or test fixed
in MDLExample pushing agains in its window CTRL+CMD+B, again 5 secs or so...

So I think this is very confortable way of develop your app. If you don't
have a build env set up, you only can do step 2, with your own app and
libraries. So If you find some problem you'll have to make some patch that
could be lost in a future FlexJS update. So, imagine that MDL Button has a
bug, and you need to fix it, and at that time you can't get help from any
of us. So you decide to fix yourself. I think is better to fix in the
project and ensure that it will be part of FlexJS SDK in the future. You
can do it since is so simple! :)

For that reason I encourage you to adopt maven

A side form this, some minutes ago, to help fixing a RadioButton MDL click
problem, Alex said us to create a minimum project example. I did it in 2
minutes project, config to build, create a branch in git and share it.
That's so amazing fast don't you think?

So in the end, I create a SDK distribution with maven (with another
terminal window), but I only use that to get NextGenAS a recognizable SDK
to point to and get Code intelligence. But for me, a nigthly does not has
more value that that.

Hope I help you understand the motivations behind. Take into account that
get the build maven env is just few steps following the Flex Maven setup in
our wiki that I share with you.

Hi Olaf,

For an example, the build tool helps automatically build and test the examples on the ASF Jenkins.

Most problems we recently had in compiler and framework didn’t break the build but they broke the examples.
So building the examples with maven for example makes us detect stuff like that easier.

And usually I have never, ever in my life worked at a large corporation relying on the proprietary build system of an IDE.

It sounds like Carlos is simply encouraging you to have the SDK repos set
up so that you can easily contribute to the SDK, if you happen to find a
bug. You aren't required to do that, though.

You can always download the latest nightly build of the SDK and compile
your project with that. No Maven required. Personally, I'd recommend
skipping Maven at first so that you don't get overwhelmed.

You can change tasks.json to build the project with asconfigc instead of
Maven.

You can change it (tasks file) and VSCode will use Josh's plugin to build
MDLExample.
3) In order to build example without reconfiguring anything you need to
instal Maven.
4) VSCode - once you point in IDE your downloaded nightly build of FlexJS
you will have intelisence working.

Hi,

@Piotr
Thanks for fixing it, I'll check it out tonight!

@Carlos
Your workflow description is really helpful!

@All
Please don't get me wrong:
I have no concerns regarding maven. I remember a WoW Effect as I've tested
the maven builds
a few months ago the first time. Thanks to Chris effort the usage is pretty
easy!
I just had a understanding problem regarding the benefit to build the
examples using maven.

In summary my understanding is still that for framework development the
usage of maven has a a lot of benefits and thats perfectly ok for me.
But for application development there's no benefit with using maven. It is
maybe even to much. For somebody who comes from Flex and would like to start
with FlexJS there're probably enough pitfalls.

Hope I got it ;-)

Thank you!

Olaf
