Fwd: Release status - Please test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2

(I'm forwarding this call for tests to the QA list and the l10n list)

It is very important to test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 thoroughly: please
download it from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/
and use it for your normal tasks but also to mark as "VERIFIED" the bugs
listed at
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem&list_id=170764&namedcmd=4.1.2_approved_and_fixed&remaction=run&sharer_id=7

Bugs marked as RESOLVED FIXED must be set to VERIFIED or REOPENED. Note
that many are still in RESOLVED FIXED state but have indeed been
verified if you read the issue. In that case it is enough to change the
issue status, but an extra verification is always helpful.

Remember, building a new Release Candidate takes time and effort, so:
- It is time to be more careful with release blockers: you can still
propose a Release Blocker, but please accept that it will likely be
denied unless we are sure that it is low-risk and important.
- I do not exclude that an RC3 will come, but we want RC2 to be fully
tested before building it, and we must definitely avoid an RC4.

These bugs are now open for a possible RC3:
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126586 from Damjan; nedds
more information, asked.
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=107619 Bug in Find & replace
with regular expression: already accepted blocker, solution was
incomplete in RC2, now supposedly fixed
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126582 When trying to access
a read/only share on Sharepoint an error is shown: This is new but it
addresses the same use case of the other Sharepoint fixes
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126573 Dictionaries were
actually not updated in some cases, probably due to a not completely
clean build, to be investigated
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126588 Portuguese dictionary
to be updated: I'll now ask the l10n list to suggest other possible
dictionary updates.

So: not many bugs so far, and not so bad. But we will have the full
picture only if everybody helps in testing, it's very easy to do so.

Regards,
   Andrea.

Yes, this is a nice find! This is clearly a cosmetic issue and if the
number is already broken in 4.1.1 we won't fix it in 4.1.2 (it would be
too late anyway; RC3 is being uploaded right now), but it would be nice
if you can open an issue for it and place a comment in
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126480 with a link to it, so
that we know that this number should be analyzed too when updating
version numbers.

   Andrea.

Hi Andrea, all

One quick question: why do all the exe files in AOO 4.1.2 have version
number 4.0.9780.500? (they were 4.0.9774.500 in AOO 4.1.1)

Shouldn't it be at least 4.1.9870.500 (so that it matches the 4.1 branch)?
Or better yet 4.1.2.9870.500 (so that users could ignore the exact build
but still know which version the file belongs to)?

Pedro

This is still on the build side. I mean, mine says Linux 64-bit since it
was BUILT for Linux 64-bit. It doesn't extract information from the real
environment where you are running it. And since we only distribute one
Windows version, the most we could get there is the generic "Windows"
string.

Yes, I am. In fact I believe that is another bug/missing feature. It
doesn't make sense that the second line in the AOO About box (apparently
only under Windows) is the date in two different formats but fails to
report what the platform is (which version of Windows and if the OS is 32
or 64 bits).

The fact that the About information misses this information forces people
(particularly in QA) to have to ask when it should be obvious (in fact it
is obvious in the information you pasted from Linux)

Pedro

It isn't expected. So it's a bug, thank you. Not a real bug in the code
since it depends on the build environment, but we may want to recheck it
for the RC3 build. In my system it is correct:

AOO412m2(Build:9781) - Rev. 1707648
2015-10-09 09:35 - Linux x86_64

Are you using the Windows build? Since this depends on the build
environment, it is system-specific.

   Andrea.

One question:

RC1 was

AOO412m1(Build:9780) - Rev. 1705625
2015-09-28 12:45:04 (Mo, 28 Sep 2015)

and RC2 is

AOO412m2(Build:9781) - Rev. 1707648
2015-09-28 12:45:04 (Mo, 28 Sep 2015)

The date/time is the same. Is this expected or is it a Bug?

Pedro

have permission to change Status.

Do I need a special permission from someone or this is a bug in bugzilla?

The issue is: we had two parallel development branches. One is the
trunk, which would lead to OpenOffice 4.2.0. For various reasons,
though, we decided to create a 4.1.2 release; all bugs that were fixed
in 4.1.2 were explicitly approved and merged from trunk, so 4.1.2 is
something like "4.1.1 plus many bugfixes that already existed in trunk
and were approved one by one". So only a small part of the trunk fixes
made it to 4.1.2.

When I sent the calls for proposing blocker issues this one should have
been proposed and included.

Now it's a bit early to think about the future, but this should clarify
your doubts: a 4.2.0 release would automatically pick up all trunk
fixes, a 4.1.x release would not.

   Andrea.

Thanks Keith for the explanation.

The fix in question was too much removed in time for me to remember it
and make a deliberate request. I remembered it only when I came across
it in 4.1.2. And when I did it was already too late.

Aviras;

Version 4.1.2 is a bug fix release only and not everything that is fixed
in trunk was back-ported to the branch from which 4.1.2 was built. For
that to have happened it would have to have been requested and then
approved as as release blocker for 4.1.2 and it never was requested,
therefore it never was committed to the branch for 4.1.2.

The issue was fixed. I remember Ariel committing it to the trunk
(revision 1652476) and myself checking the nightly build to make sure it
worked. That nightly build did include "Euro € Lithuanian" under
Currency Format (Calc > Format Cell > Numbers...). And yet version 4.1.2
doesn't.

The fix was committed to the trunk on 2015-01-16. That is a while ago.
What is exactly the cause for the fix not finding its way into 4.1.2
given that it resides on the trunk? What else can I do to avoid this
omission in the future?

You are correct and unfortunately it is late now: RC3 is being voted
upon and will be distributed soon. From what I see in the issue page, it
seems, though, that the issue has been fixed and the fix committed to
trunk, but further work is needed (or simply you are OK with the current
explanations?). Note that this release interval (more than 1 year) was
exceptionally long, so if there are bugs that were forgotten for this
release, like this one, it is important that we don't lose track of them
and avoid that they are forgotten again in future.

Regards,
   Andrea.

Lithuanian currency should have been changed to Euro as per this issue

As far as I can see the change has not been effected in version 4.1.2,

The English version for Windows is here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc2-r1707648/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe

If you need another version, look withing the "binaries" folder.

Do you want some issues to verify? Just open

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?bug_status=CONFIRMED&bug_status=ACCEPTED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=RESOLVED&f1=flagtypes.name&list_id=170870&o1=substring&query_format=advanced&resolution=---&resolution=FIXED&v1=4.1.2_release_blocker%2B

and comment on the issues that are RESOLVED FIXED.

For example, 126480 is very easy: Just check that the version number in
the window you reach through the "About" menu says correctly 4.1.2.

And 126567 asks you to check that in the same window you read Copyright
2015 and not 2014.

For every successful check, please write that you verified it with
version 4.1.2-RC2, English, Windows (for example).

You need a Bugzilla account to post comments: register get one at
https://bz.apache.org/ooo if you don't have one already.

   Andrea.

Hello Phani --

I think you probably want to test one of the pre-built binaries
rather than source. Please see available languages and platforms from:

https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc2-r1707648/binaries/

Once you click inside a language directory, you will see platform
options along with verification files -- MD5, etc. Linux downloads
are in compressed format, Mac and Win have direct install files.

When I click the first one it gave me some files. But I don't get any idea
how to install the OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 as I do not see any run option . I
can open the Bugzilla through the following link, but I do need to install
OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 in my machine right to find the bugs and to check them.

I really like to participate with you all to test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2.
Please let me know If I am doing wrong process to install OpenOffice

I appreciate your time.
