setContent and getContent

On the protlet framework there is a method that we would implement
named ConcreteElement getContent(), what is the difference between
implementing this or just using the setContent() method, I know that
getContent gets called by the framework, I am implmenting some base
classes for a project and I am trying to figure the best approach for
using the Portlet framework.
