[jira] [Created] (IMPALA-15388) Implement a C++/Rust native client
Abhishek Rawat created IMPALA-15388:
---------------------------------------
Summary: Implement a C++/Rust native client
Key: IMPALA-15388
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15388
Project: IMPALA
Issue Type: Epic
Reporter: Abhishek Rawat
The existing Python-based {{impala-shell}} introduces significant client-side latency through interpreter initialization, heavy module imports, and runtime serialization. Because standard benchmarks measure end-to-end execution, this overhead accumulates—particularly the high Python startup cost for short-running queries and Thrift deserialization overhead for large result sets. This artificially inflates latency metrics and obscures Impala’s true backend performance.
Modern analytical engines provide compiled native clients to avoid these interpreter penalties. This task tracks investigating and prototyping a lightweight, natively compiled CLI client (e.g., C++ or Rust) to replace the Python runtime, eliminate startup overhead, and provide accurate, unskewed performance profiling for end-to-end workloads.
