Master Data Service and SMX

I just read a recent article describing a "Master Data Service" in the
context of an SOA-based solution for centrally managing data--

MDS article .  Just wondering if anyone knows about MDS and how it would
relate to SMX, or more generally, an ESB approach.  Thanks.
