Can this also be configured on the datasource level?
It would be good to open a JIRA and describe the problem you face 
(https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES).
We will try not to timeout for a solution :)

I did not see a response. However, I did add a wait_timeout setting to the my.ini file. The timeout defaults to 8 hours, so I set it to 16 (in milliseconds). That seemed to provide an acceptable work around, at least for now.

You will need to hold an reference to your javax.mail.Session instance, 
otherwise it will be garbage collected and the socket will be closed 
(but I'm even not sure it will remain open if you don't create regular 
traffic).

Btw, the log message should not be an error, but a simple info.

This can occurs is the socket connection times out without keep-alives.
Which client do you use?
After how long do you see this?

Logout client server.local (127.0.0.1) because it idled for too long...

What does it mean?
