I agree, 4.0 + vote is the way to go.

The main objection people seem to have with commons logging is the way  
it uses the classloader.  Removing the use of the classloader and  
replacing it with log implementation specific jars (similar to what  
UGLI is using) has been suggested.  I don't know what the current state  
of this is, but it may be another option.
