## Problem\n pre-checks a username, then inserts it. Concurrent requests can both pass the pre-check; the loser reaches the unique database constraint and returns 500 instead of 409.\n\n## Scope\nTranslate the duplicate-key race to the existing conflict response and add a concurrency-focused service/controller test.
