[users@httpd] Apache not timing out Keepalive connections

Hi list,

I have now been struggling with the following issue for a while (about 6-7
months).

I have a situation where KeepAlive connections do not time out.

Distribution is my own hacked version of Slackware.

Server Version:	Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) PHP/4.1.1 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510
mod_ssl/2.8.12 OpenSSL/0.9.6g
Linux:		Linux dopey 2.4.22 #1 Wed Sep 24 13:29:23 SAST 2003 i586 unknown

Keepalive connections simply do not go away (Mostly).

The apache processes then just build up over a period of time until the max
is reached.  A simple killall httpd and restart does the trick.  The server
takes about 2-3 days to reach this point.  (Not a very busy server).

What is really strange is that if I reboot the server, all is fine for a
period of few weeks (longest was 2 months).
It then starts happening again.

This is not related to a spesific site, but any site. (about 50 sites
hosted).

I have tried various keepalive settings, but none seems to help.

Current settings are:

Timeout 120
KeepAlive On
MaxKeepAliveRequests 1000
KeepAliveTimeout 15

A server-status file showing this is available at
http://www.pcservices.co.za/ApacheStatus.htm  This is after a server uptime
of about 22 hours.

You can clearly see that some KeepAlive connections have been open for more
than 12 hours!!

Please help, as I have no idea what to do next.
