Hello everyone,

I have installed svn on my machine and I am using it from 2-3 months. I have
added most of things there. but not its size is too big, appx 1.2 GB, so
after that I have removed some big files from svn repository, but now i am
not able to reduce whole repository size.. so pls tell me how to reduce my
repository size.

Thanks

I've seen all the other suggestions, but wonder, with the price of hard
drives these days, why not simply add more hardware?

Well, if you're not too attached to your entire history, you can do a
svnadmin dump and specify a starting revision _AFTER_ the point where you
removed the large files. If you then load that dump into a new repository,
you get a much smaller repository.

Exactly.

Right.

As I understand it, the two changes are unrelated to one another:

On the one hand, the Subversion 1.4 *server* can use a new repository
format which is more space-efficient. If you want to use it, you must
dump the repository and reload it. Any Subversion 1.x client can
connect to the upgraded server. You do not need to upgrade your
client to 1.4 in order to connect to a 1.4 server.

On the other hand, the Subversion 1.4 *client* uses a new working
copy format. The first time a 1.4 client touches a working copy, it
automatically updates it to 1.4 format. From that point on, only 1.4
clients can use that working copy; older clients are no longer
compatible with it. This applies whether or not your working copy
talks to a 1.4 server or an earlier server.

I think Ryan is right and I didn't quite say this right. So I went back to
the release notes and found this:

----
Due to certain improvements and bugfixes made to the working copy library,
the version number of the working copy format has been incremented. This
means that Subversion clients earlier than 1.4 will not be able to work with
working copies produced by Subversion 1.4. Similarly, the repository format
has changed as well, meaning that pre-1.4 Subversion tools that normally
access a repository directly (e.g. svnserve, mod_dav_svn, svnadmin) won't be
able to read a repository originally created by Subversion 1.4.
----

What I intended was that if you have users running older clients, then you
should not just change the repository format without making sure you don't
run into this issue. I take this to mean that if you do an svnadmin dump,
upgrade to v1.4 and then do an svnadmin load, you'll get the new 1.4 format
and you have to update clients too.

I apologize if I caused confusion, and if I'm misunderstanding things, I'd
appreciate it if Ryan or someone smarter could set me straight.

True:

False, as far as I know. I see no reason to believe that existing
working copies would be affected by reloading the repository with the
new svndiff format.

Yours is a big question.

First, simply removing files won't help make the repository smaller, because
you aren't removing the history of changes. Here are some ideas I know
about.

1. You can use the dumpfilter tool to remove portions of the directory tree
in the repository.

2. You can use a dump/load cycle to save a subset of your revisions and
only reload the subset. Options to the svn dump command help you here.

3. It's my understanding that if you migrate to Subversion 1.4.x and
perform a dump/load cycle, you can reduce the size of the repository because
1.4 creates smaller repositories. But doing this won't be transparent to
your users; they have to check out new working copies.

I would not approach this in haste. Start by re-reading the SVN book about
the dump and load commands. Then check the archives for postings from
people who have tried this. And I would make sure that I had a trustworthy
backup of the repository before I started anything -- just to be completely
safe.

Erik
