Upgrading to 1.5 with no RPMs

I hope I can find some help here.

Our Subversion server is a RHEL4 box, with Apache 2.0 and Subversion 1.4.4. We also have three building machines, on AIX, Solaris and Windows, that uses Subversion 1.4.4 but only as a client. I would like to upgrade all of them to the latest 1.5.4.

My main problem is upgrading the server. I have therefore created a Virtual Machine so I can do all the tests I want. The only RPMs I could find are for version 1.5.1, and with that I can upgrade Subversion, the Python bind, mod_dav_svn and neon (this to 0.27.2). Everything works fine, but I'm worried I won't be able to find an installer for 1.5.1 for Windows (I usually build Subversion for AIX and Solaris). I know I could install 1.5.4 on Windows and keep the server on 1.5.1 but I'd like, if possible, to have the same exact version everywhere. Also, I seem to remember there were some important bugs fixed in later versions.

So I thought I could manually build 1.5.4 on the server. After all I have built it many times. But, subversion was installed as a package on the server, and I can't simply erase the existing one as there are lots of dependencies. Again, I can probably live with one version in /usr/bin and one in /usr/local/bin as the latter comes first in the PATH. Still, I'd like a clean environment.

Also, the RPM package for mod_dav_svn reports 1.4.4, and the configure script for Subversion does not build mod_dav_svn unless I have apxs installed, which I don't. I guess I could upgrade Apache too but it feels like I will be opening a can of worms.

It's a bit of a mess I know, but I would like to know what you all think. How shall I proceed? Is it safe to have Subversion 1.5.4 but mod_dav_svn 1.4.4? Do I need to upgrade Apache?

I'll appreciate any comments and suggestions.
