Spam on the wiki (CouchDB in the Wild contributors, please read this)
Hello,
Our CouchDB in the Wild page suffers from a lot of spam.
I have now added the following section to the top:
This page shouldn't be used to promote your product or services. It's primary purposes is as a tool for people to understand how and why CouchDB is being used. If you include a link here, please tell us how and why you are using CouchDB for some component of your product or service. If you do not mention CouchDB in your description, or the link looks promotional, it may be removed as spam.
I have also removed the following sites:
passged
saskiaclothing
mydochub
fixr
gpirate
weddingspartiesanything
youfindr
nofaxpayday-loans
dananghotelsvietnam
vitaminstoda
peasized
teddyandbear
obsono
stackd
swimcatcher
I tried to click through and double check each website to see if I could find any mention of CouchDB on the about page, or what have you. I am sorry if I removed a genuine site, but to be blunt, that's not my problem. These sites should have descriptions next to them, as I have outlined above. If I have removed something in error, please feel free to add it back again, with a nice long description.
The following entries do not reference CouchDB:
www.ajatus.info
www.anologue.com

sotelips.net
I had added a "Please expand" tag next to each one of the above.
See them here:
http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/CouchDB_in_the_wild
Now, I am not suggesting that all of these are spam links. I know for certain that many of these are CouchDB projects, or sites using CouchDB. What I'm saying is that the entry is too short, and provides no justification for its inclusion on this page.
Back when the project was small, this was okay. So many people use CouchDB now, that we cannot rely on simply knowing which is real or not any more. The community is too diverse. And including a link to another site is not good enough. The entry itself should justify its existence.
Ultimately, this isn't just about removing spam, or making that process easier. It's about improving this page as a resource for the community. I'd like to snatch it back from the grips of vanity and promotion, and turn it into a list of tiny case-studies, that people can use as a jumping off point for further exploration.
If you can fill out an entry for any of these, please do so, even if the link was not originally added by yourself, or the product or service is not your own. As much help as possible would be great in getting this page up to scratch.
Thanks,
N

having a list of 100 items each with too lines may be not useful.

We could start inventing some categories and have in-page links and
anchors to make things a little more organised when this page gets too
long.

It will be just enough long when anyone will have added their 2 lines.
If we can find a way to skip any scrolling that would be the best,
though I'm pretty sure we can't do that with the current wiki. Can we
have some js in ?

When the CouchDB in the Wild Page gets so long that browsers can't
render it, Damien can be a proud papa indeed. :)

Yep, sure.
But it's time to improve on that I think.

It only needs to be a sentence or two.
Paragraph at most. :)
Anything longer should probably be provided as a link.

we can handle that better though in term of data
collection/organization. Could be quite a long wiki post.

I don't think this is enough, for two reasons. Firstly, there are too many links on that page for me to be able to check them when monitoring for spam. Secondly, it doesn't help our users who may be reading this page to get an idea of how and why CouchDB is being used. They should be able to scan through this list, and get that information without having to click outside of the wiki.
I realise that all the sites YOU do are built on CouchDB, and that they are shining examples, but this policy should apply to every link on that page, or we may as well not have one. Just because I happen to know that Friendpaste is powered by CouchDB doesn't mean our next wiki gnome will.
Benoit, could you update the wiki to explain how or why you have used CouchDB on the sites you have linked to from there? You're exactly the type of developer I can imagine setting a great example for others to follow.

I have added the tags now.
Some of these will be a simple matter of adding a sentence to say that the product or service uses CouchDB. I would ask, however, that the description go into more detail than that, if possible. Right, so this needs to be on the wiki then! :)
(See where I'm going with this...?)

If I have removed something in error, please feel free to add it back again, with a nice long description.

I think I covered this in my original email Jan.

There are too many links on this page for me to click through to every single one of them, every single time I need to weed out the spam. More to the point, I want to move this page away from being an exercise in vanity.
Back when the project was small, this lis was great. As the project becomes larger, the usefulness shrinks. Imagine a list of sites that use MySQL, with no additional information. Why would you ever care about that page?
So some random site is using CouchDB. So what? That is no longer useful to anyone. I don't think people "deserve" a link here just for using the project. This page is there to provide value to people evaluating CouchDB. What people want to know is HOW the site is using CouchDB, or WHY they chose CouchDB over some other technology. The more information the better.
The information you provided in your email is a great first step. Now, my question is, why isn't that same information on the wiki? I think it should be, and I think we should have even more of it.
