[VOTE] Release of Apache Directory Studio 2.0.0.v20150606-M9

Hi all,

after almost 2 years I'm very pleased to present a new release of Apache
Directory Studio.

There are 69 resolved issues.
* Many of them are related to the migration of the build system to Tycho.
* Another large amount of issues are related to crashes and installation
problems. They are hopefully fixed since Studio is now based on Eclipse
Luna and the update site is now a P2 repository.
* Additionally multiple issues with ApacheDS configuration has been
fixed, so the configuration editor is now compatible with ApacheDS 2.0.0-M20
* For a complete list of resolved issues please see
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=12310590&version=12324644

The SVN tag:
* https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/directory/studio/tags/2.0.0.v20150606-M9/

Nexus staging repository:
*
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachedirectory-1035/

Distribution packages:
* https://people.apache.org/~seelmann/2.0.0.v20150606-M9/

Short explaination to the packages:
ApacheDirectoryStudio-2.0.0.v20150606-M9...
* ...-src.zip - the sources, what we release
* ...-p2repository.zip and ...-p2repository-dependencies.zip - Zipped
update side (called P2 repository) with the main Studio features. And
another P2 repository which includes dependencies (ApacheDS, API,
Mavibot, etc.). Those can be used for installation into Eclipse. The
uncompressed content will also be distributed as update site, hence the
content is also signed.
* ...-linux|macosx|win32*.tar.gz|zip - the Studio product packages for
the supported platforms. There are no installers, this is postponed to
next version.

Please cast your vote:
[ ] +1 : release Apache Directory Studio 2.0.0.v20150606-M9
[ ] ± 0 : I don't care
[ ] -1 : No, don't release Apache Directory Studio 2.0.0.v20150606-M9,
because...

Considering the large amount of changes and the complete revamp of the
build please review carefully. The build process is not perfect and I
had to hack a nasty shell script to create the distribution packages. In
the meantime I'll update the website.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

This P2 repo only contains the Studio plugins, but no dependencies.
There is another P2 repo with the dependencies:
ApacheDirectoryStudio-2.0.0.v20150606-M9-p2repository-dependencies.zip

You can either add this to the list of update sites (but don't install
any of them). Or you try the combined update site
https://people.apache.org/~seelmann/2.0.0.v20150606-M9/update/

Can you try if any of those?

Hi Stefan,

first of all,

[X] +1 : release Apache Directory Studio 2.0.0.v20150606-M9

Then I have to congrats you for the tremandous work you di to cut this
release ! Wouldn't it be you, I think we would have waited for this
release for at least one more years ! Thanks for that !

I have tested the srcs, the packages, and all works fine on my Mac OSX
machine.

The only thing that I have a pb wit is the installation of plugins. When
I use the
https://people.apache.org/~seelmann/2.0.0.v20150606-M9/ApacheDirectoryStudio-2.0.0.v20150606-M9-p2repository.zip
to install them, it fails with this error :

Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not
be found.
Software being installed: Apache Directory Studio SLF4J to Eclipse Log
Binding 2.0.0.v20150606-M9 (org.apache.directory.studio.slf4j-eclipselog
2.0.0.v20150606-M9)
Missing requirement: Apache Directory Studio SLF4J to Eclipse Log
Binding 2.0.0.v20150606-M9 (org.apache.directory.studio.slf4j-eclipselog
2.0.0.v20150606-M9) requires 'bundle slf4j.api [1.7.10,1.7.11)' but it
could not be found

But I don't feel like it's a blocker. That can be fixed in the next release.

Great job !

Same increased starting time for me - from 5 to 7/8 seconds (Windows 7).

I tested building too, and it requies to patch the target platform
template see http://svn.apache.org/r1684082.

I'd expect that the new version takes longer to startup, on my Linux
machine I estimate startup time increased from 5 to 7 seconds.

I assume (but I'm not sure at all) the main reason is the upgrade from
Eclipse 3.8 to 4.4:
* e4 uses of dependency injection
* e4 uses modeled UI (EMF etc.)
* e4 allows styling of UI via CSS
* Compatibiliy layer for Eclipse 3

But maybe it makes sense to profile the startup to see if how much time
is spend for loading and starting the Studio bundles...

Stefan

Yes, but the impression stays :-/
To have a clearer statement I would need to install the older version
again and try to do some measurement by handy stop watch. Maybe my
impression so wrong after some days off, maybe the machine isn't as fast
as usual on hot days...

I'll try do do some measurement tomorrow

Maybe because it has to re-create some directory and copy many libs that
were present with your previous version ?

Have you tried to relaunch it ?

The building itself not, but unzipping and running works without any
problem, it even takes over the "old" configuration.
It seems to me that the application start takes a bit longer then the
former milestone, but this is just my impression (us usual newer things
are expected to be better faster cheaper ... ;-) )

Finally the update site works. I published the website and will send the
announcement mail tomorrow. Feel free to review the website and test
download again.

Hi guys,

the artifacts are published, the (staging) website is updated (except
update site instructions). But I have difficulties with the update site,
see also DIRSTUDIO-1055, even the workaround mentioned there doesn't
work. I'll continue with investigation tomorrow and will hold back
publishing website and announcement.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

Stefan

I'll publish the artifacts, update the website, and prepare the annouce

Many thanks for reviewing, and for the warm words.

Tested installation against

OS X 10.9.5 (13F1077) and Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build
1.8.0_45-b14)

Executed like a charm.

Well done, Stefan!

Checked out by tag, followed steps in README. Compiled and tests all ran successfully. Unzipped the package for env, ran smoke test - connected to local apacheds. Everything looks good.

Test env:
Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit
(Oracle) Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_71-b14)
