Newbie Question - Servlets in Tapestry
Forgive my lack of knowledge as a newbie.
Thought I would give Tapestry a go for a new web app I have to develop.
I need to be able to receive an HTTP POST with XML from an external site while I
have a user logged in.
In a normal JSP/Servlet app I would have a servlet that receives this text. In
Tapestry what should I do?
The servlet would be reading the XML data and updating a back end.
Do I create a servlet?
or
Do I create an isolated page or some other Tapestry component?
Regards
Andrew

Once you've created the desired interaction as a service, and not a servlet, is possible to package
the new service as part of a library, and reuse it easily.
In addition, making it a service streamlines the process of creating URLs that activate the service.
So, in this case, the service could create the URL that is passed to the external client that then
submits the XML HTTP post.

But why not simply create a servlet to handle a special type of
interaction? Is there a reason to force it through the Tapestry
framework? I presume the reply will be something about global and
visit objects - but those could be easily provided to a servlet if they
needed it as well - are there any issues with that Tapestry-wise?
My personal taste here is to not couple something to Tapestry that
doesn't really require it, so I'm curious what about this situation
requires a custom engine.

What you describe is a new kind of interaction between the client web browser and the application;
you would create a new engine service. Engine services are very similar in intent and
implementation to servlets.
