Thanks Kay !

I installed LWP::Protocol::https  and that fixed it.

I got stopped on odk and assume my JDK 1.8 was the issue. Thanks for the 
tip.

Seems like both my $JAVA_HOME setting and system java setting using 
alternatives were ignored.

I cleaned up and restarted after adding
--with-jdk-home to point at my JDK 1.7 and it's been running for many 
hours now.
