[jira] Created: (DIRMINA-776) Embed Apache FtpServer into Geronimo
Embed Apache FtpServer into Geronimo
------------------------------------
Key: DIRMINA-776
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRMINA-776
Project: MINA
Issue Type: New Feature
Reporter: Jürgen Weber
It should be possible to deploy Apache FtpServer as JCA resource adapter into a JEE application server like Geronimo.
The suggested way of Embedding FtpServer is a violation of the JEE spec because FtpServer opens server sockets.

We would be glad to receive your contributions in this issue. Still, having FTPServer deploy as a JCAspec-compliant component doesn't look trivial, right?
Just for consistency, can you point to the section in the spec that forbids Secker Sockets?

it might be specified in further details somewhere else, but in the Java EE 6 spec, table EE.6-2 it lists the minimal set of available security permissions. Note that web components can not do accept or listen on sockets.

Serversockets are explicitly forbidden for EJBs:
EJB Spec, 21.2.2Programming Restrictions
"An enterprise bean must not attempt to listen on a socket, accept connections on a socket"
Generally, Serversockets require threads that handle incoming connections, and this does not fit with the application server as the sole manager of threads in a JEE environment. To handle work necessary for incoming connections the application server provides work managers that can be used by resource adapters.
See http://www.theserverside.com/news/1364656/Serve-It-Up-with-J2EE-14-Use-JCA-15-and-EJB-21-to-Extend-your-App-Server
Also, TranQL (which is heavily used in Geronimo) seems to contain a resource adapter framework.

See also the Apache licensed http://code.google.com/p/jca-sockets/
"JCA Sockets is a JCA resource adapter that accepts simple TCP/IP socket connections from clients. It allows a J2EE/JEE developer to support legacy socket clients in an easy, standards compliant way"

Moving this issue into the FtpServer JIRA project.
I agree on us violating the Java EE spec in our WAR example, so having an option to deploy FtpServer as a RA would great. I don't foresee doing this myself, hopefully someone else will step up.
