getting started

Hi y'all,

I just discovered Velocity and I think it kicks ass. Unfortunately, I
can't get the examples to work. I always receive an error message saying
that either 1) the template cannnot be found or 2) the servlet is not
responding. I tried using 2 different downloads of Velocity and neither
worked for the servlet or forum examples.

I guess that I need somebody to tell me the basics. Where do I put my
velocity prooperties file and how does the servlet reference it? Is the
properties file necessary? Is there a specific directory tree needed?

I'm really excited to get going so any help will be *greatly* appreciated.
:)

Thanks!!!
Thomas Lavery

There was a couple of responses already -

however, take a look, if you haven't already, at the
examples/servlet_example that is in CVS. It was modified to try to
alleviate some of the confusion that you are experiencing by
autoconfiguring itself.

Note that this is *not* in the 1.0.1 release, but rather in the CVS
only. It will be in the 1.1 release.

How are you running the examples, and which ones?

ive had this problem aswell

i had to set WEB-INF/conf/velocity.properties using using the full path:
file.resource.loader.path = /home/x/Java/tomcat/webapps/forumdemo/template

and them for some servers such as Orion Server I had to set WEB-INF/web.xml
to:

<web-app>
    <servlet>
     <servlet-name>forum</servlet-name>

<servlet-class>org.apache.velocity.demo.ControllerServlet</servlet-class>
      <init-param>
        <param-name>properties</param-name>
        <param-value>/WEB-INF/conf/velocity.properties</param-value>
        <!-- original value was WEB-INF/conf/velocity.properties ( no
leading '/' )
        anyone know if this is a bug in Orion Server?
        -->
      </init-param>
    </servlet>
</web-app>

this is all with the forumdemo though, hope it helps.
