Re: CouchDB logo proposal
Posted by Joan Touzet <wo...@apache.org>.
Breaking up the simple couch with something is nice, though the hole does seem a bit odd. Is there any option for just a slightly brighter patch there (like light reflecting off of it)?

I like it a lot with the two fixes mentioned before:
* no bullet hole please - we have enough fighting in the world these days -
the hole is my association with this (for sure no offense to you
Constantin!)
* I would like to see aversion with "Relax" instead of "relax" or even
"Relax!"
Thanks a lot for your great work!

Minimizing what is there is a good development
The hole for the ear plug could be left out, too
Verbal “Relax” need to be kept with this logo (what would else be the meaning of a couch?)

Not sure if this is still reasonable: personally, if I made an
electronic device with the logo, I would make whole logo
half-transparent and put behind it red color LED with resister to
control it brightness, making whole logo glow instead of just one tiny
spot on it. This will makes such indicator more notable. Notebooks
actually uses the same approach for power/hdd/wifi statuses.
Unless you want to tell us something with this hole, I don't think
it's ever need to have. And with out it I really like it, nice and
clean work!

Nick,
I value negative feedback. Without it we move at half speed and sometimes in a completely wrong direction.
I think your proposals are illustrative and valuable, therefore I appreciate your contribution.
> If I post
> something/anything please just ignore it,
The discussion is a discussion, the open group is an open group and the topic is a logo, not you or me.
We do this for CouchDB, not to feel good.
Your pitch for the last logo reads like this..
> The db symbol has two opposing couches , that face each other indicating a conversation between the two. The two vertical bars decorate the opposing couches so that a “db” is formed, a natural fit for a database. The harmony of the symbol is balanced with just enough negative space to deconstruct the image to creating a mild Yin Yang effect. It also demonstrates a sense of connectedness, yet still being separated.
> The opposing couches/db symbol is placed on a red globe indicating the highly scalable, and distributed nature of Couchdb 2.0+.
Furniture having a conversation and forming letters, harmony, deconstruction, a mild Yin and Yang effect, separated connectedness indicating scalability with a globe (puh!)
This stack of symbolism takes so many detours that it can not possibly produce the same associations in two brains.
I fail too see how it could strengthen the visual identity of CouchDB, I really think it would kill it, hence, it is a really bad proposal.
Let me be equally grumpy to the people that have juggled slogans for the past months.
“Relax” and the couch is a brilliant idea. Why rip it apart.
The only explanation I have understood so far is that some think the guy on the couch is suggesting something sexual (!)
Well, this previous suggestion actually is a solution to that
It goes in the opposite direction of the previous one that actually will NOT break the brand building and discard the recognition already built over years that never come again:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwCSb3J9EzV3UEJ1SU41NWk2Q1E/view?pli=1
The guy on the couch is redundant with the word “relax” and gives the only meaning to the symbol that is relevant, the symbol is just there to help people
recognise and
remember
the name.
Well done, Constantin Angheloiu and whoever contributed!
The sybolism (hard disks and curlybrackets) are as irrelevant as in Nicks Pitch, so if you see an opportunity to distill it even further, please do!
Simpler is better when it comes to logos.
johs:)
PS
and Nick, just to make it crystal clear
I say this for the sake of CouchDB, not to make you happy or unhappy.

Johs,
I'm not sure there is a logo in the world that your're fan of, except the
current couchdb logo. You pretty much bad mouth my work, and the other
work presented here. I don't care if you like my work or you don't, I just
want to contribute to the open source community in any way that I can. If
I wasn't already busy working on so many other projects and paying work I
would jump into the couchdb code as well. If you are so good, lets see
what you can do. I sincerely hope the others here can look past your
negativity, but I'm getting tired of it. I work on allot of other
projects, and have never seen someone so down on other peoples work. I
would appreciate not interacting with you in the future. If I post
something/anything please just ignore it, you probably wont like it
anyway. In turn, I will show you the same courtesy.

Hi Nick,
I like the idea but I feel that this is a bit too technical. It reminds me
somehow to physics or chemistry.
Thanks a lot for your motivation and efforts. I would like to ask the list
if here are any proposals we should discuss in more detail. It would be
cool to have an overview page again. iirc - there was already one ...?
All the best

Re: CouchDB logo proposal
Posted by Nick Pavlica <li...@gmail.com>.
Hi Andy,
I took the hexagon away with this image to make it less technical, and
I'm calling it clean layers. It's a simple modern image that really should
stand the test of time. All of these can be tweed until we like it, and I
would be happy to share the raw svg(s) as well if someone wants to work
directly with the image files.

It's unfortunate that they would be uncooperative, since they have such
strong roots in this project. :(

Re: CouchDB logo proposal
Posted by Nick Pavlica <li...@gmail.com>.
Alexander,
Thanks for reviewing the image, I appreciate clear and constructive
feedback. I was also a little concerned with the similarity of the small
couches at the corners, but I was having a hard time keeping their clarity
when the image was shrunk to a small size. I changed the small couches to
better reflect the main couch in the shared link below. One of the many
challenges with this design effort is the fact that we are trying to create
a great image for the project, but we have to compete with another database
that has a very similar core identity. I really wish they would have
selected a different name whey the made the move from CochDB, but it is
what it is. They may be willing to co-operate with us, since the images
are over all distinctly different, but hopefully we can find something that
doesn't require that.

Re: CouchDB logo proposal
Posted by Nick Pavlica <li...@gmail.com>.
All,
Here is my latest logo concept. I'm still trying to create something
that represents CouchDBs history, yet embrace all of the great things that
2.0+ will bring. Hopefully this one gets a little closer than the last.

Johs, thanks a lot for taking the time to review the logo proposals.
I know you have answered further down in this thread. Please refrain from
such comments to someone who is doing a lot of effort to contribute to
CouchDB. Even though you don't like it (and I am also not the biggest fan
of the last proposal) such a comment is discouraging and demotivating.
Thanks

All,
I've added another logo design for your consideration. I'm looking
forward to having a new logo for CouchDB, and hopefully one will be
selected before 2.0 is released. Here's a link to a Google doc. if you
would like it in another form please let me know. Of course all of these
formats take away from the quality I see in my SVG editor.

This is the first time a suggestion for replacement of the existing logo did not feel like a bad idea for me.
No, I dont think the symbolism counts (used in the pitch and then forgotten)
Yes, rounded corners did survive webdesign

I like it!
the only things are:
* still don't get the idea of the hole
* the "couch" could also be a "armchair" because of it's dimensions
The rest is really cool. Even though "round corners" is in Webdesign
changed to flat design without round corners, I think it still is common
use to have "roundish" style in logo creation.
If it is better than what we have is another point and would have to be
decided by the community. I am not sure how I would vote at this moment ...
Thanks for your great work and all the best

I like the contrast of “couch” sounding soft and the current logo being edgy / rigid / hard. It adds to the whole feeling, not being obvious and all.

the first thing I did with this new logo proposal here was to check the
couchbase logo because I remember they had a very round one. One could take
this as "ah you see - it did remind you of couchbase". But to be honest,
the actual logo they use is really different.
I still like the proposal but with a lill' "ouch" deep in my head ...
Cheers

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I’m not a fan of this, although it is certainly a good couch logo, no question.
I just don’t think it fits CouchDB very well.
Aside from the subjective perspective, Couchbase have been going for “more rounded couch” in their logo, and abstractly speaking, this one only adds the two back pillows and is otherwise the same (it is not, strictly, but you get the idea). So in terms of differentiating from Couchbase, this is not a good step.
