New inter-project Mailinglist iot@apache.org created

Hi all,

our new iot@apache.org<ma...@apache.org> mailing list has been created and is now waiting for subscribers :-)

What do you think would be the best way to advertise this?

  1. Send an email to each pmc in the IoT sector
  2. Send an Announce email over the usual announce@ list
  3. Send to pmcs@ (Is there such a list/alias)?
  4. Send to committers@

I think I would avoid 2 as this is more an external communication channel.
For 1 we would need a list of the IoT projects … I do know some, but by far not all and the list on:
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?category#iot
But that list doesn’t seem to be too comprehensive ;-)

If there’s something like pmcs@apache.org<ma...@apache.org>, I would prefer this but I couldn’t find it …
but I could swear I had used it for TAC stuff before.

Chris

Several comdev PMC members can give you write access to
https://blogs.apache.org/ - I sent you an invite as author.

Hi Bertrand,

think probably blogs.apache.org would be the better way. Even if I'm mainly involved in this
I am not PLC4X and don't want to create the impression it's a PLC4X party (Even if PLC4X parties rock ;-) )

For that I'll probably better talk to sally, correct or who's in charge of the blog?

But in the end we'll still be sending out emails so perhaps a little duplication doesn't harm.

IMHO a persistent URL is more effective as it allows you to
    re-advertise later as needed.

Maybe something at http://plc4x.apache.org/ as you are driving this,
    or under https://blogs.apache.org/comdev/

And you can then send that URL by email + twitter or any other channel etc.

meta-comment: Having a "what is this mailing list for" page for *all* of
our mailing lists would be awesome. Possibly as part of
lists.apache.org. Hmmm. Possibly something to add to PonyMail. /me adds
it to The List.

Hi all,

well I guess, I'll whip up an email text and we'll fire it out to announce and committers as a first shot and then post to lists I think would be a good match in addition to that.
I agree, it is some work, but I always knew it would be. And I still think it's worth it.

I would think that announcing this to the dev/user lists would get you a
broader audience of people interested in what you're doing.

As Bertrand notes, if you build it, they won't come. You'll have to go
find them. And it's totally worth the effort. Cross-project discussions
are almost always beneficial to everyone, particularly when you're all
    solving similar problems different ways.

Well, sure, but "external" is just community we haven't met yet.

Restricting this to the PMCs seems odd. I suspect you want to target all
dev and users. The committers@ list seems like a good target, for sure, too.

https://projects.apache.org/projects.html has the ability to filter
projects by category. I believe actually assigning categories to your
project was something we did last year, in advance of the fantastic
T-Shirt design for ACNA 2018.

Unfortunately, there are only 3 self-tagged IOT projects: Camel, Ignite,
and PLC4X.

All, if you read below and search and replace Bertrand's statement about
iot and you'll have the exact issue I was describing about what is the
specific plan for getting the word out to our projects.  In short, it's
very hard so don't just assume it can be done easily, quickly and often.

I don't like saying "I told you so" in general but maybe it's not too
late...having to announce and advertise each new topic-specific list
is a pain as you're noticing now.

Whereas a single tech@ list would have been announced just once, and
then people can invent as many [topics] and [subtopics] as needed, on
the fly.

I am still available to moderate a generic tech@ list if people want
to change their minds ;-)
