security issues

what is the status of the security implementation?
i was wondering about this: i have defined some additional permissions,
and wanted to check them by using the checkpermission method within my
(velocity)portlets, as these have the $security made available. but this
would not work, and as far as i could backtrace the problem, this was
because jetspeed tried to look for the user(s) which used the portlet
within the "apache" group. but this is the first time i see the "group"
used in any form by jetspeed...
has anybody made similar observations? my databases are postgres and
microsoft sql server 2000
or can anybody tell me how to change groups? or is the group-based
security to be dropped down at all?
hope anybody can answer my questions.
tia

btw: the website is down... i couldnot access it to search it by myself
