[VOTE] JAMES v2.3 RC2 build posted
I've done a build of what ought to be RC2 if there are no remaining issues.
All of the recent changes for licensing should be there, but I'm cc'ing
Cliff to ask that he please review the build to make sure that we're clean.
Also, the JavaMail and JAF files have been updated to match what we pulled
from java.net, and for which I did receive confirmation from Sun that they
are authentic.
Please review http://people.apache.org/~noel/james and vote. If it looks
good, I'll tag it and move the build to the download directory. If there
are objections, we'll resolve them.
Then, unless we find additional issues, we can vote to release JAMES v2.3
shortly.

With 3 +1 votes (Norman, Vincenzo, and myself), plus Cliff's approval, I'm
going to tag and make the release in the morning (USA Central Time) unless
there are any -1 votes.

great -- I only spot-checked two of the distros, I assume the PMC
members on the project are applying these comments to all applicable
distributions.

Serge,
Actually, I changed the URL one last time*. The email should point to
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/. The final copy of the email
that should be sent (with the correct url) has been updated at
http://people.apache.org/~cliffs/export/james-email.txt.
Stefano/Serge,
This doesn't affect the email, but you might want to update any
instance of http://www.apache.org/dist/james/server/source/ to
http://archive.apache.org/dist/james/server/source/. I think that
makes more sense infra-wise. If you do update your RDF with this,
just let me know and I'll refresh the /licenses/exports/ page.
Cliff
*Sorry to change the URL one last time, but since I wanted to make the
two .xsl files plus the registry available in the same directory, it
seemed like there should be an exports subdirectory under /licenses,
not just a set of four related export files. I've also updated
http://apache.org/dev/crypto.html to reflect the URL change.
The other files in the /licenses/exports/ dir (aside from index.html) are:
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/export-registry.xml (which
points to your RDF file)
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/exports-rdf2email.xsl (creates
email from your RDF file)
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/exports-reg2html.xsl (builds
site/xdocs .xml file from export-registry.xml)

Sorry -- been on the road for the last 48 hours with very little
online time. I have no further comments than what I offered on the
other thread; however, I did just take a second look at the latest
main src and bin releases and saw that there was no NOTICE file in the
bin distro (http://people.apache.org/~noel/james/bin/james-binary-2.3.0rc2.tar.gz).
Every distribution should always have a LICENSE and NOTICE file.
Releases with crypto should have the crypto text in the README (which
I think both bin and src had). The format and content of the files
all seemed good, when they were present.
Regarding the crypto notification stuff. I think we've already worked
out all the details with that. The web site and the email form and
content are all set. You could send the email any time (which I
linked to a while back at
http://people.apache.org/~cliffs/export/james-email.txt...you could
also create your own email any time by running the XSLT on your own
RDF file).
However...there is one thing that would be good to change, if you
can....the link to the web page in the email should probably (based on
limited discussion on site-dev) point to
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports.html instead of what it says
now: http://www.apache.org/legal/exports.html. I'll set the page up
there tonight (it will look just like
http://people.apache.org/~cliffs/export/exports.html), so you can send
it any time.

I fixed POC in the email template, but the MANUFACTUER(S) reference
comes from the project RDF file
(http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/james/site/trunk/bis_JAMES.rdf). I
was the one who started it off with "Apache Software Foundation", but
could you or another James person fix it and add the "The"? Once you
do, I'll do the refresh.

Thx Cliff. I fixed it in svn .

Cliff,
I just noticed a minor error that you'll want to make to the template that
generated:
http://people.apache.org/~cliffs/export/james-email.txt
It is always The Apache Software Foundation; the template is missing the
word "The" for both the POINT OF CONTACT and MANUFACTURER(S) entries.

yep -- that's it -- that now has the new Notification URL in it
(instead of the old one above), which is
http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/.

Thanks for doing so much leg work to see this is done properly! Just
to double check (since is the first time), I should email:
http://people.apache.org/~cliffs/export/james-email.txt
(with the appropriate headers updated)? That's it?

So far we have +1 from me, Norman and Vincenzo. I've also pinged Cliff to
make sure that the legal looks good, which it should be from prior e-mails,
and to do whatever needs to do done NOW to get this release candidate
posted. I'm currently waiting on Cliff's e-mail before copying
branches/v2.3 to a tag.
We should also expect to post JAMES 2.3.0 as a release within a week or two
if there are no further issues to resolve. According to the road map, the
open issues for JAMES 2.3 are:
JAMES-327 Mailet overview not complete
JAMES-432 Reorganize and update xdocs documentation and site generation
JAMES-573 Update james products to create the new full websites
JAMES-579 Update license headers and NOTICE to follow the latest ASF
requirements
JAMES-581 Add an "Upgrade documentation" to our docs explaining the
upgrade from 2.2.0 to 2.3.0
JAMES-582 Released packages confusions (name, artifacts)
I believe that most are sufficiently resolved for a JAMES 2.3 release.

hope to be able to give RC2 a spin on the weekend. there is no point
in +1'ing without testing...
thanks for the great work!

I have just found an error in the CommandListServManager code. There is a
simple fix (a missing "else") that will prevent a spurious exception, and
another fix to provide a correct response.
Neither is critical, although the behavior is wrong when an invalid command
is sent to a list address. I would be willing to leave this in RC2 and fix
for final. Or even fix post-final if people don't want the change now. I
will certainly fix for my own use.
For the moment, I just want people to tell me if I should make either fix
for RC2, or wait for post-RC2.
And folks, still waiting for votes other than mine and Norman's. :-)

+1 from me, at least on the code side.
I believe that we've met the licensing requirements, but I would prefer to
have Cliff confirm things for us. And we'll still need to finish up crypto
with him before going to full release status, even if we can just keep going
on this release candidate.
