   I will let @jojochuang take the lead on this one since he has already been participating in discussion on the Jira; I'm not too sure what the right path forward is here. Taking [the example shared](https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-16645?focusedCommentId=17572129&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-17572129), I'm not confident the current diff will fully solve the problem, since you'll still have in-progress gaps:
   ```
   Example:
   edits_1000_1005
   edits_inprogress_1006
   edits_1010_1015
   edits_inprogress_1016
   ```
