#############################################
Hello,
I am in dire need of some direction. I have been pouring myself into a diary for the past 6 months on an open office word document. Lots of day by day details which I need to have safe and secure. A few days ago I opened up the program, clicked on the file and instead of 15 pages of diary I have 15 pages of hashtags. ############################################################################################## and so on.
What can I do? How do I recover the doc? I have tired a number of things and none of them did anything. I just can't believe that it would just be gone like that with no recourse. Please respond quickly as I need to continue to journal.
Thank you, Sean Keough

Consult this posting for information on finding possible temporary working files, which may contain some or all of your data, or none.
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=83550#p387942
Also (I'd do this first) download Recuva or Photorec (only one needed) and let it do an indepth recovery of deleted files. Again, such files may contain some or all of your data, or none. The sooner such indepth recovery is tried the better, as operating systems may in normal course of operation overwrite previously deleted data.

Hi,
Sadly, the hash symbols are a well known issue. So it does ring a bell for many users.
In addition to Rory's link here is one where "some" cases have been captured: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17677

Doug -
Its the repetitive hash tag / pound sign in the OP's (Sean's) initial post
which will make many readers think the initial message is SPAM.
Wade is not indicating / stating or implying that a spam message will
create the issue initially described by Sean.
Wade is telling Sean that a subject line should actually describe the issue
/ problem, and not be a meaningless repitition / hash of symbols.

Wade, can you tell us what kind of spam would create this problem, and

Some direction -> Subject line. It should describe the problem.
This one - it indicates spam.

Questions:
1. Do you have a cat? kids?
2. Could it be possible that you left the computer unattended and
someone or something could have just pressed keys on the keyboard
randomly until selecting all text and erasing it?
In short: it's never a good practice to have all your data on a SINGLE
document. It's better to have new files saved with every revision. If
it's a daily edit, use the "Save As" function regularly to save the
file with a new name, e.g. "seans-journal-jun16.odt" and the next day
"seans-journal-jun17.odt" and so on. That way in the event you lose
one version you don't lose ALL text just the data you added in the
last day.
This would be a good practice, going forward...
I'm sure you will learn this valuable lesson on data redundancy in the
case you end up finding all your typed data is indeed lost forever.
FC
PS: also, regularly making copies of your documents to an external
media (flash card) or to the cloud (Google drive, Microsoft's Skydrive
(now renamed OneDrive), Dropbox, etc) is a good idea to protect
yourself from hard drive / SDD hardware failure.
