8.11.3 release
Hi all,
There have been lots of bug fixes that have gone into 9x that should
benefit all 8x users as well.
I thought of volunteering for such a 8.x release based on this comment [0].
Unless someone has any objections or concerns, can we tentatively plan 1st
September 2023 (1 month from now) as a tentative release for 8.11.3? I
think we will get ample time to backport relevant fixes to 8x by then.

Great idea, David. I don't know much about the gradle build, but I would
love to give it a try. I feel it is worth the effort, since we should
support 8.11.x releases until 10.x is out.

How difficult would it be to actually reach a workable gradle build for
8.x? I suspect it would not be anything close to trivial, and would
probably take a long time to fully troubleshoot. Whoever was the major
architect of the current gradle build should be able to tell us whether
that's a massive undertaking or not. I wasn't involved in any of that work.
The ant build isn't broken, and will not be needed for very many more
8.x releases, so I think it's probably best let it continue as it is.
That effort is probably better spent getting 10.0 in shape for eventual
release.

I wonder if it's worth it porting the 8x codeline into our build
infrastructure for 9x? i.e. use our existing Gradle build instead of Ant.
This way subsequent releases would be easier (if needed), would be easier
for anyone maintaining a fork of 8x, and we needn't increment Lucene
releases just for Solr's needs.

Am I correct that a potential 8.11.3 release cannot contain known CVEs? If so, we cannot release without carefully plugging all CVEs plugged in 9.x. Some of those may not be a simple backport, such as Jetty, netty etc, due to jar hell.

I think everything that needs to be backported for 8.11.3, has been
backported.

Just an update on the release: there is a security issue that we are
discussing in private which the release is blocked on. Once that is
addressed, we'll have the release (hopefully, shortly).

I activated the 8.11 builds on Policeman Jenkins, too. Let's see what
happens. It should basically pass as we have all historic JVMs
available, but we never know if some legacy download locations of
Restlet & co changed.

There were a few tests that were failing on PRS seeds. Noble and I fixed
them over the weekend.
There are some intermittent failures on a variety of tests in the branch,
and I'm finding it hard to get a full test run done in order to build the
artifacts. At the moment, none of them look serious or suspicious.
I think I might have to bad-apple a few of those tests, in order to get a
release out. I shall update here on that.

Thanks Kevin, Ishan for doing the prep work here.
I re-enabled the jenkins job https://ci-builds.apache.org/job/Lucene/job/Lucene-Solr-Tests-8.11/ to get a feel for the current status. We also have a smokeTest job that should be enabled when release is approaching.

Hi Ishan,
Sorry for the late chime in.
Some time ago I filled a Jira for a Solr 8 specific bug:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-16843
At that time, I wasn't expecting more 8.x releases, so I did not open a PR
for it.
I can work on a fix if we have a few days more before the release. I think
it is worth to have it in solr 8 (that's not a backport)

Thanks for volunteering, Ishan!
I wonder if it's worth it porting the 8x codeline into our build
infrastructure for 9x? i.e. use our existing Gradle build instead of Ant.
This way subsequent releases would be easier (if needed), would be easier
for anyone maintaining a fork of 8x, and we needn't increment Lucene
releases just for Solr's needs.
