The Getting Started instructions at http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/Hive/GettingStarted are incorrect. They claim that you should download a "dist-17.tar.gz" file from a Facebook mirror. This link is 404, and Facebook does not seem to maintain a publicly available Hive package at any other location I can find. Thus, the wiki should be updated to instruct users to checkout/export files from SVN. (This page is locked, so I can't change it myself)

Missing the fact that you must create /tmp and /user/hive/warehouse (aka hive.metastore.warehouse.dir) and set them chmod g+w in HDFS before you can create a table. (I run Hadoop as user 'hadoop', and then attach with my own username as a client)
Other than that, it seems to work with Hadoop 0.18.2
