just want to share the outcome of my research:
I took the head revisions of all important modules and the release process works well then, also
for branches. Matthew is still looking what has been different in his setup.

What caused some problems on my company notebook where I use maven 2.0.4 is the fact that the old
release plugin seems to use a now deprecated function which always creates a new
ScmBranch(version) even if we are for a tag.
This caused some problems with git since the commands for checking out branches and tags are
different.
branch: git-fetch [branchname]
tag:    git-fetch tag [tagname]

Summary: all is ok if using the latest versions, but it may not work with older maven versions.
