Footnotes

I am new to XSLT/FO and I am attempting to convert an XML document to PDF by
using XSLT/FO. I have got it to work except for one thing. On a single
page there may be multiple references to the same footnote, and instead of
one footnote listing appearing at the bottom of a page, every instance is
listed at the bottom of the page. For instance, I might refer to the same
footnote 6 times on one page, the same footnote will be listed at the bottom
of the page.

The problem is, when generating the FO document with XSLT, you don't know
where the page breaks are going to appear, and so I make a footnote entry
for each time it is needed. Is there any way to tell Apache FOP to suppress
duplicate footnote entries when they appear on the same page, or is there
some kind of FOP expression (like an if-then-else statement) that could be
used to only print each footnote once.

Thanks for your assistance.

afaik xsl 1.0 doesn't support detached footnote references, fo:footnote
formatting object generates both footnode reference and body. You can try to
generate only one footnote and ask for keeping table-row (as fop support
keep-together only on table rows at the moment), containing all your footnote
references on the same page, or may be markers can help you, not sure.
