installation issues -- permissions

I've build subversion and am trying to install it on RHEL on a shared
network volume /net. Somebody else owns the usual /net/bin, etc. but
I have permission to create files inside of them. Unfortunately,
subversion is insisting on setting permissions for /net/bin, which I
can't do. So the install fails.

I'd like to submit a change request, and the instructions say to
search first (which I did, though I may have missed something), then
post here to see if folks feel it's appropriate.

Comments? Ways around the problem?

In case it matters, I actually only want to build and install the
client. But I didn't see instructions for that and so have been
building and trying to install everything.
