Re: server won't start using configs from Drupal
I think the problem is CharStreamAwareWhitespaceTokenizerFactory, which used to live in Solr (when Drupal schema.xml for Solr was made), but has since moved to Lucene. I'm half guessing. :)

Looks like we better update our schema for the Drupal module - what
rev of Solr incorporates this change?

Try to change solr.CharStreamAwareWhitespaceTokenizerFactory to
solr.WhitespaceTokenizerFactory
in your schema.xml and reboot Solr.
