[DISCUSS] Geronimo 2.1.3 release

Time to start the discussion on winding down changes and preparing for a
Geronimo 2.1.3 release.

Server fixes/enhancements are listed on the Release Status page -
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxPMGT/geronimo-213-release-status.html

Details on included security fixes in dependent components are listed on
the Security page -
http://geronimo.apache.org/21x-security-report.html

The only additional changes that I know of right now for 2.1.3 are Joe's
"compatibility plugins/artifact alias" changes.

Does anyone have additional fixes they would like to include in 2.1.3
before we cut the branch and start the release process?

Yep, just realized that this morning. Thanks for the reminder to add it
to the Release Status page.

Donald,

I think you are also going to need to get a release of genesis 1.3.1
(alternative would be to revert back to 1.3 or upgrade to 1.4 ... but
that would require some changes for legal checking). BTW, I would love
to see this SNAPSHOT removed anyway as it causes problems for long tck runs.

Right, I think it's important to get these in given that we'd like to
release samples based on Geronimo 2.1.2 and ideally they should also run
on 2.1.3. This might also let us run other plugins that have previously
been released.

Actually, the sooner the better, since 2.1.3 should be focused on
getting security fixes out ASAP.

I guess the real question is how soon do we need a new release version?
I would hate to do this too soon only to have a new problem found right
after we've created a new release. It would be better to hold off on
this until we've got a clear target release date for a Geronimo release
that will include the new version.

There was a recent flurry of javamail fixes we might want to consider

Hi Donald,

Looks like all the big ones that popped up have been dealt with. I'll run
the RC through whenever it's ready.

Thanks!

We rolled back to OpenJPA 1.0.3 yesterday, due to TCK failures with the
newer 1.2.0 release. As soon as Jason W. verifies that most of the
problems he was seeing are gone, I'll publish a RC1 for everyone to

As listed in the Release Status/Plan for 2.1.3, the release branch has
been created at -

On second thought, lets not include this in 2.1.3, since it should be
focused on getting security fixes out ASAP.

But, I would be for including it in the 2.1.4-SNAPSHOT stream.

As you mentioned, 2.1.3 is supposed to be security fixes so I guess I
won't look at port it back to 2.1.3. I'll look at pull it back to
2.1.x after 2.1.3 is released. Thanks

How much longer would it take to back port to 2.1.3, test the changes
and update the 2.1 Docs?
Could you wrap it all up by next Friday (Sept. 5th)?

I've made quite some changes to the custom server assembly portlet -
check it out. I've tested some of these profile combinations, such
as Web by deploying the tomcat jsp example, Web + JMS + EJB by
deploying and running the calculator example and Web + web
services(Axis2) by deploying and running the jaxws-calculator example.
I am not sure if we want to pull these into v2.1.3?

Sounds like good suggestions to make in the 2.1.4 and 2.2 code branches.

A comment on release notes: As Jarek suggested earlier, I'd like to
change the wording of the System Requirements in the Release Notes
from:

You need a platform that supports the Sun JDK 5.0+ (J2SE 1.5.0+) or greater.

to

Java J2SE 1.5.0 or greater, and a platform that supports it.

In the README.txt, I'd like to see GEP mentioned, especially in the
Application Development section. GEP may also be used to start the
server.

These changes would be for after 2.1.3.

Our SVN seems down now, otherwise I'd make some updates.

Comments?
