Xalan build self-dependency?

It doesn't appear that I can build the current CVS snapshot of Xalan without
adding a referencing to a previous version of xalan.jar to my classpath.  Is
anyone else seeing this behavior?  It wasn't until I wiped out my classes
directory, deleted *.last from the src directory, and ensured that no
references to xalan.jar were in my classpath that this issue surfaced.
